Hi @Jsamwrites:,
I’m not sure about this item. What would seem like the proper way to model this would be to create an item for the characters, which allows to list the games using via SPARQL.
This is what we do, for example, for games with female protagonists: we do not have a corresponding for Category:Video games featuring female protagonists (Q13301728), but can do the querying using SPARQL Wikidata:WikiProject_Video_games/Queries#Games_with_female_protagonists
What do you think?

- I find your proposal interesting. However, I think with such a low number of possible values (currently only 204 https://w.wiki/Hfs), and also considering the fact that English Wikipedia list | List of video games with LGBT characters or list of video games with LGBT characters (Q6576318) needed to be documented on Wikidata, we needed this item. Another reason is that like films and TV, it's common to find genre: LGBT-related video games/video games with LGBT characters. It's also important to document that video games also have played a very role in LGBT history of rights. Reference: The complete history of LGBT video game characters. - A lot of Video game infoboxes relies on Wikidata to fill out information and i don't think they should be cluttered by adding genres that technically aren't genres for the sake of documentation. The best way to approach this would be by making a list at Wikidata: WIkiproject LGBT or creating more items of LGBT video game characters that can be included in the Query. --Trade (talk) 22:29, 21 February 2020 (UTC)
- I do think we should have 1 item per characters, and then use sexual orientation (P91). I am at the moment working on a script to create all stardew valley characters, my only issue is wether I tag all of them as bisexual (except Leah), or playersexual (and create the item). But this would permit a much better granularity in research (like, seeing what characters is what, if they are playable or not, etc). But that's also a lot more work. --Misc (talk) 13:44, 22 February 2020 (UTC)

- Thanks for answering!
- I definitely agree that it is worth documenting LGBT and video games − on that note, Misc has been doing interesting work, such as with Represent Me ID (P6554)
- I think LGBT-themed video game (Q85341917) is fine − while I’d say it’s rather a video game theme (Q42907216) (because video game genres are generally gameplay-related, not story related), I think it’s fine to use it with genre (P136) (we don’t really have a better place for now, and I’m not sure what would be better either (I guess it could work with a “theme” property somewhat similar to main subject (P921) or narrative motif (P6962) but I think that’s not how things are modelled right now so let’s continue with that)
- I am not convinced however that having en:List_of_video_games_with_LGBT_characters calls for having such an item: there are plenty of lists and categories of video games inherited from Wikipedias (see Wikidata:WikiProject Video games/Lists/Lists) and we do not create items for the particular "intersection concept" − for example, there are per-platform lists/categories (such as list of Dreamcast games (Q549923)/Category:Dreamcast games (Q6845464)), yet we do not create an item for “Dreamcast game” − we have -platform (P400)Dreamcast (Q184198). Same thing with female playable-characters/protagonist (also a topic where video games were behind in terms of representation): we do not have an item for “video game with female protagonist”, however we do store Syberia (Q580202)characters (P674)Kate Walker (Q3813335)
narrative role (P5800)protagonist (Q215972). Couldn’t the same be done for LGBT characters? - (And then we have concepts like video game with protagonist of selectable gender (Q61642128), which are even harder, because they’re essentially gameplay features and we have no convention on modeling that at the moment ^_^)
- Let me know what you think, Jean-Fred (talk) 12:56, 22 February 2020 (UTC)
Is "genre" a correct way to describe this?
[edit]I see there's been some previous discussion about this, but wouldn't it be more correct to use depicts (P180) on elements of video games and series with something like "LGBT character" instead? EdoAug (talk) 13:36, 5 September 2022 (UTC)
- Per above, I think the most correct way is to create items for characters and link them using characters (P674) − see the query at Wikidata:WikiProject_Video_games/Queries#Games_with_LGBT_characters.
- That said, in the meantime (it *is* a lot of work to create all those character items!), I was thinking has characteristic (P1552) might be a better fit than genre (P136)?
- Jean-Fred (talk) 15:56, 5 September 2022 (UTC)
- I must have missed a lot in the previous discussion. However, I agree with the has characteristic (P1552) suggestion! EdoAug (talk) 19:44, 5 September 2022 (UTC)
- On a similar note, I see that LGBT-themed video game (Q85341917) is also used in genre (P136). As per the previous discussion, is that more viable for depicts (P180) (though why not then just use LGBTQ (Q17884))? EdoAug (talk) 19:50, 5 September 2022 (UTC)
