Welcome to the American Studies Program at the University of Duisburg-Essen!
Discover North American Studies at UDE
North American Studies at UDE is dedicated to the multidisciplinary study of North America, its manifold and often conflicting cultural geographies, literary and cultural production, and multi-ethnic urban and rural societies.
Major fields of research include early modern and colonial, regionalist, and contemporary literature and history, urban spaces as well as popular culture and media. We are particularly interested in the interconnections between U.S. American and Canadian as well as Mexican and Caribbean literatures and cultures as well as in the imaginary and actual crossings of multiple borders in North America from the fifteenth to the twenty-first century.
Our award-winning teaching reflects our research interests and uses a variety of innovative teaching formats – but don’t take it from us, take it from our students!
05.11.2024, 12-14 UhrUrbanes Labor/Excape Lab mit dem Architekten Francesco Casalbordino von der UNINA in Neapel
The Escape Lab is a workshop by Francesco Casalbordino, co-hosted by Barbara Buchenau on November 5, 2024, 12-2 in T03 R04 D10. It adopts an interdisciplinary approach, combining architecture and the humanities, with the goal of recognizing, mapping, and describing the significant places in the contemporary landscape of the Ruhr.
A key element of the lab is the active involvement of students, who are invited to reflect on the places they frequent in their daily lives – such as the routes they take to university, public spaces, recreational areas, transport hubs, and areas along infrastructure. Students will be encouraged to identify one or two significant places in their everyday lives that hold particular meaning in the region's transition from an extractive and industrial hub to a commercial and logistics center. Please register with Barbara Buchenau.
