UNF art students on study abroad give back to Brazilian nonprofit
University of North Florida printmaking students teamed up with graphic design and digital media students to give back while on a recent study abroad trip to Brazil. The students used works developed in printmaking classes to create branding, marketing and digital media projects for Projeto Axé, a Brazilian non-profit art organization that offers art education to homeless children.
This three-week immersive, experiential and transformational experience in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, included visits to art galleries, museums, music and dance performances, and participation in popular culture festivities and events. Associate professors of art and design Claudia Scaff and Sheila Goloborotko, both Brazilian natives, served as faculty advisors for the trip.
Founded in 1549 on the northeast coast of Brazil, Salvador, Bahia is considered one of the oldest cities in the New World. The first colonial capital of Brazil and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985, Salvador is noted for its colonial architecture, historic churches, folklore, music, and cuisine. Populated by various ethnic groups—Native American, African, and European—Salvador is a unique converging center of many cultures.
