Over the weekend, CBS News published a new poll with the headline, “Poll finds support for Trump’s deportation program falls.” The story seemed straightforward. But the story behind the story is worth looking into.
The West faces a series of serious economic challenges: a demographic collapse that undermines growth; a welfare state that sucks money from the future and dispenses it in the present; a regulatory structure that focuses more on redistributionism and top-down control than on innovation. But,…
As a teenager, I had the chance to visit the Indianapolis Motor Speedway the day after Jeff Gordon scored the win in NASCAR’s first race at “the greatest racecourse in the world.”

Too many summer vegetables are never a problem. When faced with an abundance, it's helpful to have a few recipes on hand to put the season's bounty to creative use. One flavorful option is to make a caponata.
God bless Martina Navratilova. She said an honest, courageous thing about surrogacy.

For the past five years, I have worked closely with Pennsylvania’s small businesses, veterans’ organizations and the skill game industry to craft a fair and balanced solution for the regulation and taxation of legal skill games. The result is Senate Bill 626 — a proposal that protects organi…
Summer brings sunshine, travel, outdoor fun — and a higher risk of dehydration. It’s something many people brush off as a minor inconvenience, but dehydration can become a serious medical issue if it’s not addressed quickly. And often, the early signs are subtle.
I stood next to my 13-year-old as I watched her novocaine start doing its work. “Watching you on that chair is in a sense worse than being there myself,” I told her. “Shall I hold your hand?”
This week, Tucker Carlson spoke at Turning Point USA’s big event in Tampa, Florida. There — without naming President Donald Trump — he unleashed on the Trump administration, suggesting that they were covering up a child sex trafficking ring and denigrating Trump’s victories thus far. “If you deny people what they actually want long enough and instead substitute things you claim they should want, like bombing Iran ... or you spend all day telling me that it’s so important that boys not play on girls’ soccer teams or whatever. I agree,” Carlson stated. “But I don’t know, it kinda feels like you’re feeding me appetizers. At some point, I want to look around and see a better country. I want to see a country I recognize. I don’t want to see people sleeping on the sidewalk. I don’t want to see people ODing on drugs. I want to know where those drugs are coming from. Why can’t you stop it? You’ve got the U.S. military. Don’t you have Seal Team Six? What are they doing today? Are you going to give me another segment about how impressive the U.S. military is? Why aren’t they employed to make my country better? Why are my cities disgusting?”
We live so close to the carnival that we can hear what is happening down there by just sitting outside.
Back in the days of gas station foldout maps, it was easy to get lost on unfamiliar roads. In fact, it was MUCH easier to get lost than it was to refold those maps.
The year was 1976, and Jimmy Carter, a Sunday school teacher from Georgia, had shocked major newsrooms by discussing his born-again faith.
Recently, I walked in to the room to cover a local municipal government meeting for The Standard-Journal, and one of the individuals on the borough council immediately struck up a conversation with me, prior to the start of the meeting. Although it had been some time since I last covered thi…
Can it be a coincidence, or merely a case of synchronicity, that in the age of Trump — a decade-long epoch that began in 2015 — several serious, high-profile books have been written about presidential character?
Environmental groups are now rich.

Tomatoes hit their stride in midsummer when they burst with sun-ripened sweetness. There’s no better way to enjoy these beauties than at their peak and prepared in the simplest way to let them shine. A Caprese salad does just that. Named after the Italian island of Capri, a Caprese salad is …
Vacations offer a unique opportunity to pause, recharge and reflect. In stepping away from the pressures of everyday life, many of us find that we naturally adopt healthier routines during a summer getaway like rising earlier, moving more, eating lighter and taking time to truly rest. Imagin…

I moved along the garden row, pulling weeds as I did so. I noticed one marigold plant in the row along the edge of the garden that was not aligned with the others. Every time I saw it, it bugged me, but with it being hot and the plant contentedly blooming where it was, I decided against moving it.
Now begins the run-up to an important marker in our national life, one that will spark contemplation and controversy.
As we begin the countdown to the 250th anniversary of the formation of this nation, we should be thinking about the circumstances that made the foundation of the United States of America possible, what has undergirded the prosperity and relative peace we have enjoyed for almost two and a hal…
Gardening today is not like my parents’ gardening. Dad gets out the one-horse plow and Spotty to pull it. Dad bought Spotty for his sweetheart before they married. She was “Mother’s horse.” Spotty came along with her into our family when they got married.
God understands what we’re saying even when we don’t use words.
A nation at a crossroads
Progressives love unions.
For years, NASCAR’s July 4 weekend visit to Daytona International Speedway was considered the season’s mid point. While NASCAR — unfortunately — no longer races at Daytona over the holiday weekend, the season is still at its mid point. As a result, I’m handing out mid-term grades to teams.
A journalism reporter is a career I would love to pursue in my life. I would like to get to know people’s perspectives and how they see the world.
It seems like forever since Miss Donna and I sat down to write what is happening at the Kingdom Kidz’ Puppet Home and on the road. Wow! I just looked at the calendar, and it was over a month ago. How time does fly.

It was a somewhat sad, quaint scene; I got out of an Uber and noticed eyes on me immediately. I had arrived at Planned Parenthood’s flagship Manhattan center. It’s supposed to close to being sold, but for now it’s still in operation. Saturday used to be a big day for surgical abortions here,…
The faithful gathered for a more than symbolic rite at St. Elias Orthodox Church in Damascus — the Feast of All Antiochian Saints.

When the living is easy in the summertime, the cooking should be easy, too. Open a bottle of beer and a tin of Old Bay Seasoning, and you are good to go with this simple and flavorful shrimp recipe. Using beer as a steaming liquid lends a mildly sweet and hoppy flavor to the shrimp. Choose a…
I blinked. What was I seeing? I opened my eyes in the stillness of the night. The room had a dark cloud all over it.
The 4th of July represents the celebration of the birth of our nation. At its inception, America was built on the imperfect promise of democracy framed by the belief of human dignity and the rule of law. While these truths hold true today, our country is at yet another cross road in our unfo…
PETOSKEY, Mich. — The sun is out, the lake is glistening, the strawberries are bright red and summer-sweet. Golfers and anglers are busy, cyclists are on the move, brats are on the barbecue. This is Michigan at its best.
After Sen. Thom Tillis announced his opposition to Donald Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill, the president excoriated the North Carolina Republican and vowed to support a primary candidate against him next year. Tillis promptly declared that he was not running again, depriving Trump of leverage…
On the first day of school, I’d tell my freshmen English students to keep their options open by putting time and effort into their schoolwork. I’m sure most were thinking, “When am I going to use this in ‘real life’?”
I am pretty slow at complaining to companies, medical personnel, distributors or retailers. Once in a while my rights are affirmed by me. I have had several events in my long life that disturbed me enough to complain, but I found these people are trained for dispersing customers’ or clients’…

With each passing day, the violence wielded by ICE, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, grows more intense and widespread. One grotesquely emblematic example of this was the recent violent arrest of 48-year-old Narciso Barranco in Santa Ana, California. Narciso, a hardworking immigrant…
