Non-Ferrous Continuous Casting Process
• The process of continuous casting essentially is that of pouring molten metal into a fine grain graphite die,
which is water-cooled.
• Precious Metals
• Copper alloys
• Coinage alloys
• Gray Iron
• The metal then solidifies and is withdrawn from the die by means of take off rollers.
• This process offers the advantage of non-stop production and also ensures optimum material quality.
• The graphite die is machined in the size required;
• This allows metals to be produced at near net size ready for scalping and rolling.
• The cast metal can be cold rolled compared to static cast metal which has to be hot rolled to achieve the required size and
crystalline structure in the finished metal.
• When casting with the die adjoining the melting chamber, two alternative procedures are possible:
• Continuous Casting with horizontal installation
• Square/Rectangular
• Round
• Semi-Continuous Casting with vertical installation
• Round
• Advantages of graphite for use in continuous casting are:
• Low surface wetting by molten metals
• High thermal and chemical resistance
• Increasing strength with a rise in temperature
• Good lubricating and frictional properties
• Excellent resistance to temperature change
• High thermal conductivity
• Complicated parts with close tolerances can be machined into required shapes
