Learning Strategies
Study skills
Try to learn 10 words a day – use the new words both inside and outside
the classroom.
Refer to a dictionary or to the Word List at the back of your book for the
new words.
Try to speak to your teacher and classmates in English. The more you
practice English, the better you will become.
Listen to English songs and English programmers. You will begin to
understand more and more each day.
Use a weekly chart so that you can always plan ahead.
Learning Strategies (to be suggested to Ss):
Pay attention. Watch TV with analytical eyes.
Try to avoid the use of subtitles. Your brain will read the text and pay
less attention to the audio. Subtitles are useful for specific bots of
information that are difficult to understand after a couple of attempts.
Watch a TV show looking for specific language items such as functions,
vocabulary, and grammatical, intonation or pronunciations patterns.
React to what you are watching and get others involved as well using
the target language do something so as to express how you feel about
the situations, events or actions in a show (write on a journal, discuss
with peers, text a friend, post on social networks, etc.)
Watch for differences. Pay attention to celebrations, rituals, interactions,
etc., that are done differently in the target language.
Be on the lookout for opportunities to use what you have watched. Try it
out in a piece of writing or a conversation to make it part of your
repertoire.
Use other resources to support your understanding. Use a dictionary,
the internet, ask your teachers, ask native speakers (via Facebook,
Messenger, etc) when you are unsure of something.
Keep word/grammar/learning logs. Write down what you have learned
and possible uses for it, and keep a record of your most successful
strategies and share them with others.
