Tenets of Crisis Communication
Introduction
The tenets of crisis communication are principles that organizations employ for building crisis
responses using actions and messages. Crisis communications and management can be difficult
to deal with for those involved in communications and the management teams (Fearn-Banks,
2016). During the period of covid-19, the nursing leaders at King Salman Bin Abdulaziz
Hospital – Riyadh used the tenets of crisis communications in communicating and managing the
health issue of Covid-19. The communication from the nursing leaders was aimed at collecting,
organizing, and disseminating information concerning the covid-19 crisis and helping the
affected individuals and the communities recover from the crisis. The tenets of crisis
communication employed included Planning, honesty, stating priorities for the communication,
avoiding speculation, consistency in communication, Embracing the role of the media, involving
Communication with emotion and empathy, and planning for post-recovery communications.
The nursing leaders ensured that the crisis communication plan had emergency
communication procedures during the events of dealing with victims of Covid-19. The plan
contained the names and contact information of the crisis management team, and it provided an
understanding of the level of the covid-19 crisis being faced by various individuals and
healthcare settings. The communication plan was used as a criterion in evaluating the challenges
of the crisis. The nursing leaders used the media to provide direct access to the individuals to
whom they intended to pass information regarding the Covid-19 crisis (Bennington, 2014). The
media was used in communicating important facts concerning Covid-19 such as how it spreads
the intended audience including verbal, non-verbal, and visual communication strategies. All the
strategies are used as roadmaps for guiding communications across all mediums and audiences
and aligning with values and purposes and the intended outcomes of the communication process.
As a nurse who worked during the crisis of covid-19, I observed the use of verbal
communication strategy in addressing the nurses and other healthcare professionals in the
clinical settings. Therefore, I intend to use this as a future nursing leader in nursing practices. A
verbal communication strategy involves the use of different types of oral communication means
including phone calls, face-face interactions, and emails (Tuohy, 2019). The choice of using
verbal communication is because it enables nursing leaders to interact with other nursing
professionals and build rapport. Verbal communication drives information more efficiently and
bearing in mind that the existence of perfect communication is not always possible but through
verbal communication and nursing leaders’ communication skills, there is always a smooth path
over disputes in work settings and resolve any arising issues. Verbal communication also
enhances the retention of information by the audiences (Kourkouta & Papathanasiou, 2014).
Conclusion
The tenets of crisis communication and strategies are important plans which act as blueprints
for healthcare settings in times of crisis and enable them in responding immediately. They act as
crisis emergency plans involving communication steps and prevention measures centered on
