You are writing a news article set in TODAY’s time. You imagine we never had the Declaration of
Independence guaranteeing our rights. Create a fictional story based on 2 of the issues on the list. See
SAMPLES below for some ideas (don’t copy!)!A news article includes details on who, what, where, and
when of an event. It usually includes quotes from people who were present.
Step One: Pick two grievances from this list:
• • No trials by jury
• • Not able to trade freely
• • Unfair taxes
• • Quartering troops in your home
• • Not able to vote for government leaders
• • Standing armies in your neighborhood
• • Judges’ salaries and jobs at the will of the king
Which two did you pick? not able to trade freely and unfair taxes .
Step Three: Write your story. You will have at least 2 paragraphs describing an event that has happened as a
result of us having no laws against the grievances above. You will have to research the grievance to know
what it meant back in the day. Then, make it relevant to today. Be creative! Have fun! Make it realistic!
Considering our country's age, its wealth, its productivity, and its efficiency, our territory is
an impressive one. We are a hard-working, honest people, ready to build our own
businesses and prosper. Even with all these attributes, one wonders how long will we be
subjected to British abuses that prevent our country from progressing.
The British have exploited our natural resources dishonestly for years, leaving us as
captives. Firstly, we must stress that England prohibits us from freely negotiating our own
products, that we produce and construct, that we plant and harvest. Because of this, we are
left dependent on the English trade, which believes that it is entitled to price our work so as
to reduce our output.
There is no dependency between us and our products, and we must reaffirm our autonomy
and indomitability.
Because England wasn't satisfied, it added abusive and totally unjust taxes that don't
accrue to us, but to them. Due to this, the UK is becoming increasingly educated and
structured, while we lack the financial resources to address countless socioeconomic issues
in our country, such as education, transportation, and communications.
Example:
On May 28, Brad Austin passed by the British standing army at the mall. Not
looking where he was going, Brad walked into one of the soldiers and knocked
him down. The standing army immediately arrested Brad and took him to jail for
assaulting a British officer. Brad tried to explain that it was a mistake. He showed
the officer his call log on his cell phone to prove that he was talking on the phone
and not paying attention to where he was walking, which led him to bump the
soldier.
The judge has decided to hold the trial next month for these offenses. At his court
hearing today, Brad repeatedly asked the judge for a jury trial. Judge Susan
Elizabeth responded, “A jury trial is not a right. You assaulted an officer and must
be held accountable.” After the interview, the judge was overheard telling friends
that she knew that the king wanted to make sure that any violence on a British
officer was punished to the fullest extent of the law. She also told her friend that
she felt that the king would give her a pay raise if he was pleased with the
outcome of the trial. Several supporters are planning a protest at the courthouse.
High Taxes On Popular Holiday Baking Items On May 19th, a man named
Thomas Atkins was on his way to the grocery. He only needed one thing. His wife asked him to
pick up molasses to bake gingerbread for the holidays. He picked up some molasses and went
to check out. The molasses was $4.00 but the total price now was $6.00. He only brought
$5.00. He thought that this was unfair and that having these unfair taxes are wrong.
