B. TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION
1. Rationale Today with the alarming experience of droughts,
typhoons, heat waves, floods and other deadly natural disasters
which come from the rising of global warming and climate
change that threaten the world, there is a need for the energy
industry to find renewable energy sources free of carbon dioxide
pollution and greenhouse gas emission. Energy-related carbon
dioxide (CO2) emissions contribute the majority of global
greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (66%); these include: electricity
production, transport in all its forms and cement making and
industry, to mention a few (Letcher, 2017).
One of the primary renewable sources of energy is the
generation of power from wind. According to the National
Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in 2001, the Philippines
has a wind potential of 70 gigawatts which may contribute for the
Philippines to increase the RE-based power generation from its
2010 capacity of 5,438 megawatts to 15,304 megawatts by the
year 2030, targeting an additional RE capacity of 9,865
megawatts which has been a goal for the National Renewable
Energy Plan (NREP) to achieve.
Wind offers an enormous source of renewable energy.
This have been realized as a variable source of free energy for
hundreds of years. Wind or air in movement contains the kinetic
energy which is them converted by the wind turbine for us to have
mechanical power. This turbine is connected to a generator which
gives electricity. This concept has been a significant player as
means of producing renewable energy since 1980’s. Wind power
gives us wide areas for applications. It is evident because it can
provide up to 800MW of power (Scansen, 2012).
Nowadays, we live in a world where there are many ways
to generate electricity but these electricity generation techniques
result in pollution and therefore there is an urgent need for
transition from non-renewable energy system to one based on
renewable resources to reduce the dependency on the
conventional depleting ways of electricity generation. Moreover,
using wind energy as means of producing electricity is one of the
most efficient ways to light our world.
Even though that there is increase in the number of
vehicles, governments, engineers as well as researchers pay
serious attention to the possibility of harnessing renewable energy
from it.
This study will be focused on wind energy power
generation by harnessing wind energy from moving vehicles.
Since the speed of the air flow facing the wind turbine blades will
B. TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION
be equal to speed of the vehicle, hence kinetic energy of that air
might be utilized for electricity generation.
The simulation of the wagon with wind power system unit
is installed on highways where there are many vehicles passing
every day. The unit includes wind turbine, gearbox, and generator
along with battery storage unit which will be installed inside the
wagon. Air flow simulators will be conducted to define the
optimum location for the wind power generation unit. The
economic and ecological profit of implementing wind turbines
and the whole generation system will be discussed. The power
generation capabilities of the wind turbine will be discussed for
further development of the proposed study.
It can be observed in our world that the effects of using
conventional sources of energy such as fossil fuels and coal
deliver us only to the horrifying side of climate change. Tapping
to the potential of wind energy harvesting system on highways
which acts as a source of renewable energy, it can be envisioned
that the unsolved problems on climate change due to non-
renewable sources of energy be solved progressively.
1.1. Statement of the The study generally focuses on the development of a wind
Problem energy conversion system that can harness wind energy on
highways in providing an alternative to conventional energy
sources.
Specifically, the study aims to:
1. design and assemble an energy generating device which
can harness wind energy produced by passing vehicles and
convert it into useful energy by using wind turbine
electricity generation system;
2. test and evaluate the technical performance of the system
in terms of the following.
a. output voltage with respect to the change in wind
pressure produced by passing vehicles;
b. power output;
c. time required to charge a 12 V battery;
d. conversion efficiency; and
3. conduct a cost analysis of the system.

1.2. Significance The use of wind energy system that can harness wind energy
on highways is of critical and great help in providing an
alternative to usage of conventional energy sources. Moreover,
the developed wind energy conversion system for electricity

generation can be used by the different members of the society.
Local Government Units. The project will help in
achieving the sustainable development goal of the government
which is to provide clean and renewable energy and as laid down
under the Renewable Energy Act of 2008.
Power Stations. This proposes an idea that will reduce the
costly transport cost of electricity from far-away stations and
large power losses as it can be erected almost in every highway
with vehicles passing in it making the electricity generated be
easily used by the consumers.
1.3. Time and Place of The operation of the device was assessed through placing it on
the Study simulation of operation in Cavite State University – Cavite
College of Arts and Trades Campus, Rosario, Cavite.
1.4. Scope and The study focused only on the development and
Limitations designing of a wind energy harvesting system which gathers
energy from passing vehicles on highways to provide alternative
to conventional energy sources. This study only evaluate the
technical performance of the system in terms of output voltage
with respect to the change in wind pressure produced by passing
vehicles; power output; time required to charge a battery; and its
conversion efficiency. The device will be tested to light up a
single lighting to provide light to the road ways at night time
2. Expected Output This project will come up to a prototype of a wind power generation
system that harness energy from moving vehicles on highways that is to
be ideally implemented to highways of Cavite.

3. Expected The major parts of the wind energy conversion system are
Outcomes turbines, generator, inverters and the charge controller. The
system is placed along the highways. Once the presence of wind
pressure started the rotation of the propeller, there will be
generation of the mechanical to electrical output of energy. The
output will be used to charge the battery that will energized the
streetlight as indicator.
