Module Description
Tribological systems: the interfaces between two or more bodies in relative motion; Geometric,
chemical, and physical characterization of surfaces; Friction and wear mechanisms for metals,
polymers, and ceramics, abrasive wear, delamination theory, tool wear, erosive wear, wear of
polymers and composites; Boundary lubrication and solid-film lubrication; Rolling contacts.

The course is intended to introduce the student to the concept of:


- Interfaces between two or more bodies in relative motion
- Geometric, chemical, and physical characterization of surfaces;
- Friction and wear mechanisms
Module Outline:
1. Introduction to Tribology
2. Introduction to wear and wear control
Types of wear, Adhesive wear, two-body and three-body Abrasive wear, erosive wear,
cavitation wear, etc. Tribo systems and tribo-elements, Measurement of Surface roughness
Re, Rz, Experimental Studies on friction on various tribo systems using pin-on-ring (POR)
and pin-on-disc (POD) Machines, etc. Sample preparation, wear measurement of various
tribo-elements, using POR and POD machines. Calculation of wear volume and wear
coefficient, comparison with existing data.
3. Diagnosis of wear mechanisms
Using optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy, Etc., Wear resistant materials,
wear resistant coatings, eco-friendly coatings designing for wear, Systematic wear analysis,
wear coefficients, filtration for wear control.

Function of Tribo-mechanical systems, Structure of Tribo-mechanical systems, Tribological


interaction, Functional plane, mechanical Work plane, thermal plane and material plane. Role
of Tribo processes in mechanical systems, Wear as a system property. Contact Mechanics,
number of bodies taking part in contact process, Macro geometry of bodies, Deformation
mode; elastic , plastic and elastic-plastic, Types of Relative motion; static contact, rolling
contact, sliding contact, contact physics and geometry, Contamination layer, absorbed gas
layer, oxide layer, work hardened layer.
5. Friction and wear
Friction control and wear prevention, boundary lubrication, tribological properties of bearing
materials and lubricants, theories of friction and wear, instabilities and stick-slip motion.
6. Lubrication of bearings
Mechanics of fluid flow, Reynolds equation and its limitations, idealized bearings, infinitely
long plane pivoted and fixed show sliders, infinitely long and infinitely short (narrow) journal
bearings, lightly loaded infinitely long journal bearing (Petroffs solution), finite bearings -
hydrostatic, hydrodynamic and thrust oil bearings, heat in bearings
7. Boundary and hydrodynamic lubrication
Pressure-viscosity term in Reynolds equation, hertz theory, Ertel-Grubin equation,
lubrication of spheres.
8. Design of various Tribo-elements; such as: Plane bearing, Gear, Seals, Piston and cylinder,
Friction devices, cutting tools. Design of lubrication systems.

Study of lubrication systems.

Four Ball Testers.
Coefficient of friction using pin on disc type friction monitor.
Brake line friction test rig.
Evaluation:
Projects and Exercises 30%
30% -- two journal paper study reports (15% each) with output presentation
Final examination 40%
Attendance Requirement:
- Minimum of 75% attendance during lecture hours
- 100% attendance during practical work sessions, except for some unprecedented mishaps
- All exercises and project works must be submitted by the specified dead line date.
