xxonMobil Corp, headquartered in the US, was
formed in 1999, by the merger of Exxon and Mobil.
It is the largest of the six oil supermajors. It is also
the worlds largest company by revenue, and the
largest refiner in the world.
Mobil Industrial Lubricants (MIL), a division of ExxonMobil
provides lubricants for many industries, including the mining
industry; supplying the end users, such as mining companies
as well as OEMs. Its products include greases as well as
hydraulic, gear and engine oils. Mr Umut Urkun, ExxonMobil
Industrial Marketing Advisor, Europe, Africa and Middle
East, says the company is looking to supply solutions for the
whole lifetime of its lubricants, offering engineering services,
increased productivity and safety.
Industrial lubricants
ExxonMobils engineers work closely with leading
equipment manufacturers for insights into equipment
trends and lubrication requirements. These insights then
help guide product development, giving the research
chemists and lubricant formulators the ability to build
lubricants for some of the most demanding applications
from the ground up. As part of ExxonMobil Fuels &
Lubricants, the Mobil-branded industrial lubricants field
engineering services (FES) team offers advice on sound
lubrication practices.
Mobil SHC next-generation lubricants
While the primary function of a lubricant is to protect
equipment, reduce unscheduled downtime and extend
oil drain intervals, advancements in synthetic lubricant
technology now mean mining companies can select
oils and greases which provide outstanding levels of
protection as well as other potential benefits such as
improved fuel economy.Three next- generation products
have recently been added to ExxonMobils Mobil SHC
synthetic lubricants family. Mobil SHC products help
deliver overall balanced performance while offering new
levels of energy efficiency, sustainability and safety-
related benefits. Key products include:

Mobil SHC 600 - the enhanced formulation has been
upgraded to improve viscosity and low-temperature
properties while delivering outstanding performance
across a wide range of circulating and gear applications,
all with up to 3.6% energy efficiency. Energy efficiency
relates solely to the fluid performance when compared
with conventional reference oils of the same viscosity
grade in gear applications. The technology used allows
up to 3.6% efficiency compared with the reference
when tested in circulating and gear applications under
controlled conditions. Efficiency improvements vary
based on operating conditions and applications.
Mobil SHC Gear - this gear oil was reengineered
to help deliver optimum equipment protection and oil
life in gearboxes, even under extreme conditions, with
enhanced resistance to micropitting and significant
reduction in energy consumption.
Mobil SHC Gear OH this customised formulation for
mining off-highway vehicle (OHV) electric wheel motor
drives helps deliver wear protection and performance in
severe duty cycles and extreme climates.
Signum oil analysis
Today, more companies are seeking to intensify
predictive maintenance practices increasingly depending
on oil analysis to ensure equipment reliability and reduce
costs. ExxonMobils on line Signum oil analysis program
is specifically tailored to monitor critical indicators in
used oil based on leading equipment manufacturers
specifications and international standards, resulting in a
better understand the condition of a companys lubricants
and equipment.
Mobil branded industrial greases
Mobil-branded industrial greases, whether mineral or
synthetic, help to protect equipment, extend re-lubrication
intervals and help enable problem-free operation. Based
on carefully selected mineral and scientifically engineered
synthetic base fluids, in combination with patented
thickener technology and synergistic additive systems,
Mobil-branded synthetic greases are specially designed
to meet a wide variety of operating conditions in both
industrial and mobile equipment. These conditions include
very high and low temperatures, water contamination,
heavy or shock loads, and variable speeds. Mobil-branded
synthetic greases such as the Mobilgrease XHP Mine
Series are available in a range of viscosity grades.
An operator in Egypt recently benefited from
introducing the Mobilgrease XHP 322 MINE product into
its earthmoving equipment. The operator had previously
used a lithium complex grease, however, this was leading
to high grease consumption, alongside frequent equipment
downtime which was resulting in high labour costs to
maintain the machines. Following recommendations
from an ExxonMobil Field Engineer, Mobilgrease XHP
322 MINE replaced a lithium complex grease in all 27 of

its earthmoving machines, due to the greases proven
track record to operate effectively in high vibration, high
temperature conditions.
The introduction of Mobilgrease XHP 322 MINE into
the earth moving equipment saw an impressive extension
in the re-greasing intervals of machinery, extending these
on average from 18 hours to 50 hours. The customer
reports this reduction in grease consumption resulted in
a saving of US$35,700 per year. Furthermore, due to the
reduced equipment downtime, the company reports it was
able to increase productivity by 1.7% and save a further
US$46,900 per annum in labour costs.
Commercial Vehicle Lubricants
In addition to greases, for mobile equipment ExxonMobil
offer a range of lubricants that deliver the combination of
excellent performance as well as fuel economy and energy
efficiency potential that operators strive for.
For over 80 years the Mobil Delvac brand has been
used in heavy-duty specialized lubricants for commercial
and utility vehicles. Its formula, designed in the companys
global research facility in Paulsboro, New Jersey, US.
ExxonMobils engineers are aiming to extend engine life,
while meeting the next level of stringent pollution control
requirements all around the world.
Synthetic lubricants are taking a larger share of
the market; the range of Mobil Delvac helps make new
equipment more efficient. The Mobil Delvac family of
engine oils consists of four commercial lubricants: Mobil
Delvac 1, Mobil Delvac XHP, Mobil Delvac MX and Mobil
Delvac Super 1400. While the ability of Mobil Delvac to
help extend engine life has been proven, the company
also seeks to extend the life of other components in heavy-
duty equipment, by expanding the Delvac brand to include
drivetrain lubricants, greases, and coolants.
The heavy-duty diesel engine oil, Mobil Delvac 1 ESP
5W-40 is another product engineered to deliver productivity
and fuel economy benefits to mining customers. At the
La Herradura mine, located in Sonora Desert of Mexico,
Construplan operates more than 40 pieces of heavy-duty
equipment, including large trucks, heavy-duty pickups and
excavators that rely on Mobil Delvac 1 synthetic heavy-duty
diesel engine oil. Along with heavy loads, the equipment at
the mine is often subjected to extreme conditions - ranging
from 50 degrees Celsius (125 F) in the summer to -10 C
in the winter (-14F).
Since implementing Mobil Delvac 1 in its operations,
Construplan has reported significant benefits, including
enhanced equipment performance, increased uptime,
improved fuel economy and extended oil drain intervals.
As a result, Construplan leaders say they have been able
to reduce oil consumption, minimise used oil waste, and
maximise the overall productivity of their equipment and
people.
The benefts of high performance synthetic oils
in mining applications
ExxonMobil believe that by combining the use of high
quality synthetic lubricants and an effective oil and equipment
analysis programme, mining operators can look to achieve a
competitive advantage in their operations, helping to maximise
productivity and reduce the fuel consumption potential of their
mining machinery and equipment. In addition, health and
safety benefits may also be realised. By reducing scheduled
and unscheduled maintenance, operators can eliminate
the associated safety risks that engineers face when
undertaking work.
