NORTH CHARLESTON — A man has been arrested after fleeing the scene of a two-car collision that left one person dead and another injured.

On Sept. 11 around 11:45 p.m., officers with the North Charleston Police Department responded to the intersection of Rivers Avenue and Benderson Drive after receiving calls about a vehicle collision, said NCPD spokesperson Harve Jacobs.

Near the entrance to a North Charleston shopping complex containing the local North Area 3 Magistrate Court, officers found one vehicle submerged in a roadside ditch with both occupants trapped inside.

The passenger in the entrapped vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver was transported to a hospital, Jacobs said.

The Charleston County Coroner identified the fatality victim as 80-year-old Joanne Hampton-Lawson.

The driver of the second vehicle had fled the scene on foot and was later apprehended in the nearby Hanahan jurisdiction.

Elder Antonio Caceres, 31, is charged with two counts of leaving the scene of a collision that resulted in death and bodily harm and two counts of felony DUI.

The NCPD Traffic Unit is further investigating the circumstances of this collision.
