The Philadelphia branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, or NAACP, announced the results of Saturday’s election with Cathy Hicks re-elected as president.
Hicks will remain in the same role that she has served in since 2021, beating Emmanuel Bussie, a nonprofit and community leader. The branch has elections every two years.
The election began in August and ended on Saturday at 5 p.m. Members of the local chapter had to be official members for at least 30 days to vote online.
In May, Hicks and the local branch expressed support of the 76ers’ proposed new arena. “Having a seat at the table allows this organization to advocate for equitable opportunities and inclusive growth,” Hicks said at the time.
The Philadelphia Sun, where Hicks is a publisher, reported that the new first vice president is Deshawda Williams, a tenured social worker specializing as a behavior specialist consultant contractor. Williams also serves as the executive chair of the NAACP health committee.
The second vice president is Donnell Martin, a Philadelphia resident and longtime member of the Philadelphia branch.
Union leader Samuel Staten Jr. was elected third vice president. He is the business manager of Local 332, one of the largest African-American Unions in Philadelphia.
Veronica Norris was elected Secretary. She brings over 25 years of experience working in the local NAACP chapter. She serves as the chairperson of the NAACP Philly ACT-SO Committee and is a member of a number of committees.
The assistant secretary is Brenda Myers, who is the co-chair of the NAACP Philadelphia ACT-SO Committee.
Toshiko Reed was elected treasurer and Lillie Coley was elected assistant treasurer.
