Ikea today unveiled its new Starkvind smart air purifier, which not only removes particles like dust, pollen, allergens, mold, and smoke from your home, but also serves as a modern end table.
Expected to hit shelves in October, the Starkvind comes in two models: a standalone, floor-based air purifier or an integrated coffee table—available in light or dark finishes for $129 and $189, respectively.
Used on its own, Starkvind's three-filter system captures and removes large particles (hair and dust), small airborne contaminants (pollen), as well as smoke and unpleasant odors. Connect it to the Trådfri gateway (for another $35), and the device can be controlled and scheduled from anywhere with Ikea's Home smart app. The purifier boasts five fan speeds, plus auto mode, which adjusts ventilation pace based on the volume of tiny inhalable particles (measuring 0.1 to 2.5 micrometers) in the air, as determined by a built-in sensor.
"For Ikea, the smart home is not about gadgets. It's about making life and home better through combining our solid home furnishing knowledge with digital solutions and technology," according to Henrik Telander, product owner for the Ikea Home smart system.

The flat-pack retailer's clean air crusade began last year with the introduction of the Förnuftig, a standard purifier that can be hung on the wall or placed on the floor to remove solid and gaseous pollutants from your home. "Clean indoor air is an important factor for health," Telander said. "We know that there is no single solution to solve indoor air pollution. We work long-term for positive change, to enable people to purify the air in their home."
