Monthly Roundup - July 2024

  • Comment
It’s time for another monthly roundup. I know, I can’t believe how fast the months are flying by either! I’m a little delayed on posting this one this month, as there’s been a lot going on our end, but we've got some big updates from July, so let’s take a look at what we got up to.

My Reports Page
A new ‘My Reports’ page, which displays all of your moderation reports and their current status. You can find the page by navigating to your moderation settings and clicking ‘My Reports’. Here’s the link: https://next.nexusmods.com/my-reports

We’re still working on improving this by tidying up the display of some report data, adding closure reasons for reports and adding optional notifications when your reports are closed.

Mod Comment Search Feature
You probably saw we had some downtime early in July specifically for this, as we explained in our news post, the long-awaited mod comment search feature finally made its glorious return. We’re happy about it and we know you are too.

Nexus Mods App

To update on the new app, well, there isn’t one this month. However, we can explain why.

We decided to skip this month’s release due to some fundamental changes we’re making that require updates to almost every part of the UI. With so much needing to be worked on, we simply wouldn’t have it completed in time. So, we thought it was more important to make sure that when we give you the new release, it is better than the current 0.5.3 version.

You can find a lot more information in our forum post here, this will cover what we’ve been working on, why it’s important and how it will benefit the app in the future.

New Server
We launched a new Singapore CDN Server to improve download speeds for users in the region. At the moment you’re not able to manually select this server as we’re not sure if it’s going to be permanent. We’ll be able to update you all on this in 3 months at the end of the trial period.

Moderation Tools
There’s been a handful of updates to our moderation tools, so let's run through them all:
  • Block/Unblock Mod Donation Points: Community Managers (not Moderators) now have the ability to block a mod or user from earning DP. This is another tool in their kit to be used when there is a flagrant breach of our ToS.
  • Related Reports: Our Moderators now have the ability to quickly view all of the previous reports made against a user or their content, allowing the moderation team to spot trends and make more informed decisions.

What else?
  • Design System: We’ve continued working on the Next site so it uses a more consistent and considered design system. As you all know this is an ongoing project that we’ll continue to work on for the foreseeable future.
    • Updated mod cards are now available and an example can be seen here: https://next.nexusmods.com/profile/Pickysaurus/mods. We’ve made some changes to the mod tiles. The entire mod tile is no longer a clickable link. Like the old mod cards, only the image and title will take you to the mod page. Whereas now links to the author name, game, and category have been added for easy navigation. Another update we've made is that images not using the correct aspect ratio are now filled with a gradient, which looks much nicer than a solid colour. The author icon and name are displayed on the tile because a specific design for profile pages hasn’t been created yet, ensuring a uniform look across the site. More improvements are on the way, including the return of the menu to quickly track, endorse, or view the mod image gallery.
  • Download Statistics Update:  We changed how/when we update statistics, so that updates are no longer instant, but happen periodically now. For example, on mod pages the count of downloads now updates every 15 minutes.
  • File Tabs Update: We updated the ‘Files’ tab on mod pages to give the premium banner a refresh. It’ll now call out a little more strongly that users with ad blockers are being throttled more than those without (1.5 MB/s vs 3 MB/s). Whilst this is nothing new, not all of our community were aware of this, so please consider supporting us and Mod Authors by displaying ads.
  • External Links: Any navigation links to external sites will now open in a new browser tab by default.

Eww, Bugs
  • Fixed an issue introduced by last month’s navigation updates, which broke the blurring on game-specific pages.
  • Addressed VirusTotal timeouts, we’re aware more can be done here though.
  • Fixed an issue with new game notifications.
  • Mod image titles can be edited again.
  • Gave mod download stats a kick after they stopped updating.
  • Fixed mod counts for new games.

What’s to Come?
  • New Pages: We’ll be working on moving the ‘Mods’ and ‘Game’ pages over to the new Next site, which will involve moving them into our new design system.
  • Mod Download Statistics: Another new page is in progress, which will deliver a monthly breakdown of your mod’s download statistics. Although this is to replace functionality we plan to remove from Donation Reports, we may enrich the new report in future with other statistics (e.g. Endorsements).
  • Attach Files to Reports: To finish off the work on our new moderation system, we’ll be giving users the ability to attach files (e.g. simple images and text files) to reports. Moderators will be able to use this extra contextual data to make better moderation decisions.
  • Image Compression Changes: Some of you noticed we made some image compression changes, by trying a smaller WebP, and were unhappy about this. We saw this, we heard you, and we rolled back this change. We’re currently testing AVIF instead.
  • Design System Improvements:
    • Collection Card Tiles - We’re making some changes to the collection card tiles as seen on user profiles.
    • Collection Lists - New grid layout, filter design and more.

As always, keep your feedback coming; we’ll bring more updates next month!

I saw a significant increase in payout, but I suspect that was due to the surge of the Fallout series. It has urged me to mod again, I hope it remains this way, but if not that's OK too. I just hope my earnings don't decrease below previous levels, it's not worth my time to mod anymore if that happens.

So I just received my donation report for April and May and the download to donation point ratio has dropped by a whole lot compared to how it was before, which is seriously disappointing. At this point I think I am done posting my mods on Nexus, it is clear to me that the ones in charge of Nexus isn't thinking about supporting the mod authors that have made Nexus what it is Today.

End of an era I guess.

I only have 1 mod. It is quite popular in the game. Installation and everything is well documented and easy. Questions in comments are immediately answered. So I thought the DP change would probably favour me if anything. Yet my DP/Download dropped massively. RIP :D Really wondering who is farming in this new algorithm now...
Edit: Apparently it is not even used yet?...

hey Ch4nKyy. yes, reports for Apr and May are old UDL-based reports, but Nexus dropped DP multiplier from 3.0 and 3.5 for March and Feb, to 2.0 and 2.13 for Apr and May. official reason - influx of fallout fans after that TV show. meaning site downloads increased massively thanks to F4 and FNV mods, but mod authors sharing cut left the same (~300k), therefore multiplier dropped. everyone except a few F4 and FNV modders got less than expected.

I honestly puzzled why are you guys doing that to mod authors.

first, 3-month delay with new reports, so people seriously dedicated to modding on Nexus were in the dark on how many hours they can spend on modding now.

then you revealed new algorithm will rely on "interactions", which imho leaves way more means to exploit the system than UDLs and leaves some mod authors (which don't rely on wide audience) over the board.

then this eff-up with deploying new DP system.

then Apr and May reports, where DP multiplier dropped from 3 to 2, due to number of downloads increased drastically, but sharing cut was left the same. by this you punished everyone beside F4 and FNV modders, despite other games mod authors didn't do anything to deserve it.

I understand that company is growing and there is inflation, you reacted with increasing subscription price, its fair. its great you are fighting DP system exploiters and those farming DPs, we appreciate it, modders spending thousands of hours on real mods were pissed more than anyone else to see some other release standalone patches, re-release mods with every new game update and getting rewarded for that.

but why are you started to punish people creating content for Nexus on regular basis? I don't understand.

I love modding, I spend few hours on modding every day, both raw editing of xaml files for BG3 UI mods and drawing maps for Skyrim is extremely time consuming. I can allow to do that only because of DP system, otherwise I would need to take more paid job instead. I believe its a story for a lot of modders, some use their qualification to code for mods, some work in Blender for hours. your DP system brought a lot of skilled people to modding, they are making quality mods, they are increasing your audience. yet, somehow everything you do lately (except a free premium) is punishing those people more than anyone else.

I think the real problem is that some modders/curators' work is too dependent on DP. It seems to affect more than just motivation now. Take a break until you feel like coming back, it seems like you need it. Sorry if I sound rude.

cyan49, you don't sound rude, you just probably don't realize that bigger mods are quite a commitment and a lot of them won't be possible without DP system. same for most series of mods, they are exist because people can spend their potentially working hours on new mods and be sure that won't affect their lives.

I think I understand what you said but it's not my experience, this is why I might sound rude. Of course I appreciate the hard work you guys, but what I said was that when an author can't continue development/support without DP, the situation is likely in some kind of red flag. I never think that putting someone in this situation is what Nexus wanted to do with the DP system.

A little off topic, your situation seems more suitable for the "Verified Creator Program" where you can develop paid mods once you apply to Bethesda and get verified.

it could probably be a red flag 10 years ago, when mods were mostly a smart singular features or a simple fixes. UGC changed a lot since then. tons of artists, modelers and coders work on mods because they love the process, but it also became possible thanks to DP system or rewards from devs. I had a pleasure to communicate with some professional artists and coders in a few game modding communities (BG3, Skyrim, F4, DD2) and those people are making fantastic things possible everyday, I'm sure they are the main driving force of growing Nexus audience. and I don't know why some people keep thinking that there is some "true modding" which is all about being enthusiastic once an year, while making mods regularly and expecting being rewarded for that is borderline crime.

years ago Nexus was one of the first among modding platforms provided a way to mod and being rewarded more flexible and opened than some devs (you mentioned Bethesda), without cherry-picking of content and with clear sharing mechanism. all the more hard to see latest changes, both DP multipliers going from ~5 to ~2 in 4 years and how fighting morons exploiting the system turning into even more exploitable stuff like those "interactions".

last thing - I'm not a fan of dramatizing things, people will adapt one way or another or change a platform or will just mod less (while others - more), what's happening is not the end of the world. I just wanted to say loud what some modders afraid to mention publicly.

Whatever you did, the site is noticable slower now ... and any image on the site with an alpha applied does not work anymore. Hopefully this will be fixed soon. I see why you probably did that ... :) alright uploading a new image fixed it by itself. So you might have your reason to crash all the images ,)

I must also say, that besides many of good additions, since the major layout swap the forum, network is far less responsive and instable. You had alot of site problems since then. Furthermore, the site needs alot of time in comparison to before loading any link. I think it all comes down to the network, server you use. Nothing i get mad about but it might be worth sharing my experience.

Sidenote: The premium feature like 100+ mods per page dont work on the new layout! I only get a few handful of mods to browse per user, and need to click page by page eventhough i have premium. Making one of the major advantage of beeing "premium" useless.

Good luck on fixing, im sure you will do. Thanks for all the support.

      Thanks for the feedback!

We're constantly working on improving the site performance and have a dedicated Dev + Ops team assigned to this. I hope we can improve this substantially for you in the near future.

The profile page has, I believe, never had the option to show more than 20 or so mods at once. But it's good feedback that we could make it respect the premium feature to show up to 100, I'll schedule that improvement.

Thanks for the fast reply. My bad it says:
      Number of items to show per page 20 / 40 / 60 / 80
With the new site changes as a premium i can only see 24 items/commennts and the site preferences do not work with the new layout in this regard. Thanks for taking the time.

AVIF is not supported in Classic Firefox/Gecko forks like Palemoon (and other browsers which lack AVIF decoder), and results in blank images everywhere on the site.

Also, you are applying a site-wide conversion for .png, .jpeg and .ico files into AVIF (and did the same with WebP) while completely ignoring content negotiation header (Accept: request header), which is a terrible malpractice when developing a website.

Let users decide which image format they want to see. If you're bothered about serving larger files, lower quality JPEG and WebP would be (and were) fine. Nexus is not a damn art gallery.

I'm sorry to hear that Nexus isn't running smoothly on your browser of choice (Palemoon). Our supported browsers are (excluding forks):

      • Chrome
      • Firefox
      • Edge
      • Safari
      • Opera

We only develop and test on these browser, as this covers 99% of our users. We don't have the capacity to do further testing to ensure the site runs smoothly on any other browsers, but we do keep an eye on browser usage and will adjust this list if the numbers significantly change.

I can't give you an informed answer on the request headers, but I'll pass that on to the developers.

Nexus is not a damn art gallery.
Contrary to your statement, Nexus Mods is used as an art galley of sorts by many users and the Media share is an important feature that we'll continue to support and improve. You may not use this feature, but many of our users do. We love to see the fantastic imagery and videos that Nexus site users create!

We really like the new cards too and don't think there's a need for the author name/avatar to be removed specifically for one page (it makes our lives much easier to use one mod card design everywhere). That being said, some users have given us really negative feedback on it so we're keeping an eye on it.
@Iluviel I see. Well, wherever the final profile design takes it, I'll figure it out. As said earlier, they're looker cleaner and crisper and I wouldn't change a thing.

It's something we could add in the future, but the biggest issue with that right now is there's no way to "Opt out" of specific notifications. If you reply to a long thread I think it's safe to say you don't want to be notified of every further comment forever. You can upvote this kind of thing on the feedback board if you want to show your support for the idea

Best way if you want to be informed of replies is to make sure you're leaving a new comment and not replying to someone else. (There are no notifications at all for comments on site news posts at the moment though!)

so if someone click reply to my specific comments, they also mentioning me, so i only got notification when someone mentioning me

well, this feature can be active by default and be deactivated in user settings

How about regional pricing for subscriptions? I think Nexus users are all adults enough to understand that salaries differ greatly around the world and 80 pounds in SE Asia is what someone might earn a week.

Whilst salaries may differ around the world, the cost to serve a file is the same in SE Asia as it is in North America. A user in SE Asia "costs" us just as much as a user from anywhere else. For this reason, it's not practical to offer regional pricing.

Technically it's actually A LOT more expensive to serve downloads in Asia, South America and Africa than it is in America or Europe.

For clarity, with our providers, compared to Europe:

      - Singapore is 79% more expensive to serve files from.
      - Sydney is 213% more expensive to serve files from.
      - Bueonos Aires, Sao Paolo and other SA locations are 102% more expensive to serve files from.
      - Johannesburg is 159% more expensive to serve files from.

So if we wanted to provide a superior Premium download service in these locations we should actually be charging more, not less.
