The Witcher 3 REDkit Modding Contest

  • Comment
Exciting news for Witcher fans! We're thrilled to announce our collaboration with CD PROJEKT RED for the upcoming The Witcher 3 REDkit modding contest.

Get ready to unleash your creativity and join the official modding contest for The Witcher 3 REDkit! This May, CDPR released the Witcher 3 REDkit, an end-to-end solution that allows users to create new experiences and modify every aspect of The Witcher 3. Based on revamped versions of the same tools used by the developers nearly a decade ago, this kit is now available for free to anyone who owns The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt on PC. You can claim it on Steam, GOG.com, or the Epic Games Store. For more details, visit the official website of the editor.

The release of REDkit has already inspired a wave of fantastic new mods for The Witcher 3, but there’s still so much more to come. To celebrate the innovative, the amazing, and the downright wacky, CDPR and their partners have put together a set of amazing prizes to win, including:

  • NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080, sponsored by NVIDIA
  • Gaming headsets, mice and keyboards, sponsored by Razer
  • The Witcher team jerseys and playing cards, sponsored by Dyenamik
  • The Witcher varsity jackets, sponsored by InsertCoin

Here are some details from CDPR about the contest:

We invite you to craft a completely new questline made of 2-3 interconnected quests! Here’s your chance to tell your own tale and forge an adventure of your own making — whatever that might be! For each submission, we’ll be looking for creativity, originality, and technical excellence to shine through.
If the main task isn't up your alley or if you need a warmup, you can also take part in smaller Modding Challenges along the way! A themed challenge will be unveiled every couple of weeks to give you an opportunity to showcase your individual skills. There will be 3 in total, with the first one appearing soon!
In order to submit your mod, you will need to upload it on Nexus Mods at https://www.nexusmods.com/witcher3 and provide a link in the submission form available on the official contest website. You will also find there a handy set of Frequently Asked Questions!
You can participate in as many tasks as you want. However, please keep in mind that:
  • In the main category you can participate individually or in teams of up to 5 people (you can only be a member of one team);
  • Entries in the main category can be submitted until October 14th, 2024 3:59 PM CEST;
  • In challenges you need to participate individually, but you can take part in as many challenges as you wish (you can only submit one mod to every challenge)
  • Entries in challenges need to be submitted within specific deadlines, as communicated in respective challenge announcements;
  • In order to be eligible in the contest, mods can't have been published prior to April 16th, 2024 1PM CEST
  • Submitted mods can be updated until the submission phase deadline.

Modding Challenges will be judged by CD PROJEKT RED and Yigsoft team members. For the Main Category, a shortlist of submissions will be made by CD PROJEKT RED and Yigsoft judges. The final result will be decided by a community vote.

    I am actually happy that the Redkit was released. I tried to learn to mod Skyrim, however, there was so much involved I just did not have the time to learn. I have been learning this software since it was released and I find it easier to work with than Skyrim's creation kit. The only interest I really have with the Redkit is creating quests and I have already learned how to set up simple quests. The three things I need to learn before I start publishing quests are cut scenes, editing animations in Blender and creating NPC's...... might take awhile since I am working on cut scenes right now. I do wish I had more time to do this and maybe I could meet the deadline for for the quest contest that ends in October, but, I may not be ready before then.

      cut it shorten it up so people can see where this is going maybe its enought. also if you tell them that you work on more maybe you can hype up people , like a trailer but short. show them that your work exists

    I agree regarding the time frame. They should've released the modding tools at least 1.5 years ago with the next gen update, so everyone would have had enough time to play with it. I would like to participate personally I but I still need to get my hands on the engine and modding in general.

    Good luck to the participants!

    They have to hold a contest hoping to revive the modding community for this game but there simply isn't any community left. This is what happens when it takes your incompetent company 9 years after launch to release the official modding tools.

      With all due respect this is completely incorrect. First they are far from incompetent, the community is far from dead, and these are not just modding tools but a game engine they made public which is vastly superior. One of the possible reason they're only doing it now is the fact they're moving to UE and so they don't need to keep that engine private anymore :) This contest is an amazing way to tell everyone about the huge dev kit they just released!

      yeah.. 19 new mods this week (all of which are low-quality trash) vs 350 for Skyrim. Definitely the modding community of this game is reaching all time highs now that the dev kit is released.

      Make sure you take 2-decades to release modding tools for the next game, I'm sure it will help even more.

      The modding community for The Witcher 3 could never reach the size of Skyrim, because The Witcher 3 is a Story Driven RPG, not a sanbox.

      the rule that we have to use in game assets and can't use assets from outside (even ones with permissions or purchasable) is a big let down ngl.
      i mean even creating a good level asset from scratch before a close july 30th deadline is another bummer

      Some of us prize quality over quantity. And you only need a fraction of the mods you need for Skyrim where you need hundreds of mods and a ton of patches just to make the game look halfway decent and playable

      They only even released it because CP2077 was such a flop and they were scared there would be no goodwill for their next game. That's also why, along with the Nvidia money (who themselves were scared for gaming because RTX is a flop too) made the RTX update that nobody cares about and is broken even now for most hardware setups.

      Will this contest help? I mean it can't hurt. Hopefully whoever wins this actually gets their prize, I've seen too many companies jerk around the winner though and not actually payout until a social media stink was made. I can kind of smell that coming here too, again, good luck to whoever wins it and I hope you get your prize.

      I enjoyed the game and will play it again at some point, but I have no real hope for a modding scene to develop. Even for Skyrim AE, which is easily the most modded game, there's been a decline as the game, even on re-release, is just slowly aging out too much. Mods can only enhance things, but at some point you've just played the base content enough times that even with mods it's time to just move on. Maybe next time they can release the modding tools while the game's community is still active and interest is there, but I don't know that I have confidence in either them or Bethesda anymore.

    if someone could make a mod to add a path linked to level so you can do all quest and get new items useful without getting overleveled, that's why I left the game 2 times after the baron quest

    Really appreciate the fact that CDPR still cares about this game after 9 years.
    I wish more companies would follow their example.
