Modern metal just seems like such a pointless term. When the perception of "modern" sounds changes, these bands will be out of vogue and not "modern" anymore. That'll mean that people who have tagged hundreds of bands that way will have to go through untagging them all.

Dimmu Borgir is SO not a Black Metal band. They were, yeah, but they ARE not. Which is why they are referred to as Symphonic Extreme Metal. Because they don't fit into any specific subgenre. And yes, I do know that it's not a real subgenre. Can you not read?

The Unguided does not play Melodic Death Metal. Just accept it. "Modern Metal" is the only term that fit them. It may not be an actual subgenre, but it's the only term that really fit them. Just like how bands like Dimmu Borgir and Cradle of Filth are referred to as "Symphonic Extreme Metal" bands. Not because it's an actual subgenre, but simply because they don't fit into any established subgenre.

@MechaBarbarian: Don't be. It's nice to have some easy listen metal once in a while. And while not all these bands are great, there's always bands like The Unguided, old Sonic Syndicate and even some of the heavier, more atmospheric stuff like Marionette. At the very least, they're not shitty scene-core bands like Attack Attack!, Woe is Me, Asking Alexandria etc.
