Submit

Scope Note

Learn about the steps you must take after filling out your application forms to complete the submission process, how NIH checks your application for completeness prior to review, and NIH submission policies.

How to Submit, Track, and View Your Application

The Submit step in the grants process involves three distinct actions:

  • Submit your application to Grants.gov by 5 p.m. local time on your due date using your chosen submission method
  • Track your submission in Grants.gov and eRA Commons and address any identified errors
  • View your assembled application image in eRA Commons to verify we got it and that it correctly reflects your submitted application information.

How We Check for Completeness

We really care about the details. For a fair review, all applicants competing together for funding must adhere to the same rules. Your application will be checked at Grants.gov, by our eRA systems, and finally by our staff before it is referred for review. Explore the types of application checks performed at each step.

Submission Policies

What happens if …

  • An application due date falls on a weekend or holiday?
  • You’re unable to complete the submission process on-time because the principal investigator on the application has a personal emergency?
  • An issue with a federal system impacts your ability to submit on-time?
  • You need to swap out the assigned principal investigator after submission but before review?
  • Your organization is closed on a due date due to a natural disaster?
Tip
