Victims and family of those killed in the mass shooting at an LGBTQ+ nightclub in Colorado Springs in 2022 spoke Tuesday after filing lawsuits against the El Paso County commissioners and former sheriff. The lawsuits allege the killings could have been prevented if the sheriff’s office used the state’s red flag law. Court documents cite the arrest of the shooter, Anderson Aldrich, a year before the mass shooting, when Aldrich reportedly said they would be the “next mass shooter.” But no attempt was made to use the red flag law, the suits allege. That law would have allowed officers to temporarily seize Aldrich’s firearms. The lawsuit says that could have prevented the nightclub shooting.

The new action-sports league being launched by Shaun White will air on NBC beginning next year. White announced earlier this year that he was putting together The Snow League, a four-stop circuit that will feature halfpipe snowboarding and freeskiing. The first event is set for March 7-8 in Aspen, with the rest of the schedule still to be announced. White plans on getting 20 men and 16 women in each contest for a prize pool of more than $1.5 million over the first season. A list of athletes who have committed to the league is expected later this year.

McDonald’s is investing $100 million to bring customers back to stores after an outbreak of E. coli food poisoning tied to onions on the fast-food giant’s Quarter Pounder hamburgers. The investments include $65 million that will go directly to the hardest-hit franchises. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has said that slivered onions on the Quarter Pounders were the likely source of the outbreak. Colorado reported at least 30 cases; Montana reported 19; Nebraska, 13; and New Mexico, 10. Illnesses were reported between Sept. 12 and Oct. 21. At least 104 people got sick and 34 were hospitalized.

More than 1 million migrants are living and working legally in the U.S. under Temporary Protected Status. They are from 17 countries that the U.S. has deemed unsafe. But President-elect Donald Trump and running mate JD Vance have suggested they would scale back the use of TPS under their new administration. Advocates say that has created anxiety for those who been shielded from deportation. That includes hundreds of thousands of people from Venezuela who fled political violence and economic turmoil. Haitians, Venezuelans and Salvadorans are the largest groups of TPS beneficiaries and have the most at stake.

Greg Maffei is stepping down as president and chief executive of Formula 1 owner Liberty Media. The company says the 64-year-old Maffei will leave his role when his contract expires at the end of the year and become an advisor. Liberty Media’s 83-year-old chairman John Malone will be the interim CEO. Maffei was a leading figure in the takeover of F1 in 2017 from long-time rights holder Bernie Ecclestone.

Republican Gabe Evans has defeated Democratic incumbent U.S. Rep. Yadira Caraveo in one of the nation’s most-watched races. Evans flipped the Colorado House seat north of Denver to Republican control. The race for Colorado’s 8th Congressional District was a crucial piece in Republican’s goal of retaining control of the House. It also tested Republicans’ and Democrats’ appeal to Latinos, who make up nearly 40% of the district’s population. Evans is a state representative and former police officer and soldier. He focused on border security and reducing crime. The 8th District was created after redistricting in 2020.

Republican Gabe Evans won election to a U.S. House seat representing Colorado on Tuesday, defeating Democratic Rep. Yadira Caraveo. The 8th Congressional District, which is located north of Denver, was drawn after Colorado was awarded an additional House seat in decennial reapportionment. Evans serves in the state House and previously was a police lieutenant. Caraveo is a first-term congresswoman who previously was a state legislator and pediatrician. The Associated Press declared Evans the winner at 9:38 p.m. EST.

The Denver district attorney’s office has opened an investigation into the leak of voting system passwords that were posted to a Colorado state website in June before being taken down last month. Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold has characterized the leak as an accident. She says it did not pose an “immediate” security risk. The passwords are only one part of a layered security system and can only be used in person in secured and surveilled rooms. The mistake comes amid skepticism over voting systems. U.S. elections nationwide remain fair and reliable, however.

The election of Donald Trump returns an ally of school choice to the White House, this time with a Republican-controlled Senate — and potentially House — that could be more supportive of the kind of initiatives that fizzled during his first term. Although proposals to expand private school suffered high-profile defeats in several states, Trump’s victory has brought new optimism to advocates of expanded school choice at the federal level. Jim Blew served as an assistant secretary in the U.S. Education Department in the first Trump administration. He said he’s hopeful the new Congress will greenlight ideas like tax credits for donations to organizations that provide private school scholarships.

U.S. officials are proposing tighter restrictions on oil, solar and wind energy development across more than 6,500 square miles of federal land in the U.S. West. The goal is to protect a declining bird species, the greater sage grouse. Grouse numbers plummeted in recent decades because of drilling, disease and other pressures. Friday's plan would eliminate loopholes that allowed development in areas considered crucial to the bird’s long-term survival. Interior Department officials say it balances development with conservation. However, it is doubtful the proposed changes would survive under President-elect Donald Trump.

Republican Jeff Hurd has won the U.S. House seat in Colorado that Rep. Lauren Boebert left. Hurd’s victory fulfills the congresswoman’s hope that her mid-election departure from the race would make it easier for a different Republican to retain the seat after she nearly lost it in 2022. Hurd is a more mild-mannered conservative in an older GOP tradition. He beat Democratic candidate Adam Frisch, the same man who nearly unseated Boebert two years ago.

Republican Jeffrey Hurd won election to a U.S. House seat representing Colorado on Thursday, maintaining Republican control of the 3rd District seat now represented by GOP Rep. Lauren Boebert. Boebert, who nearly lost her seat to Democrat Adam Frisch in 2022, decided this year to run for former Republican Rep. Ken Buck's vacant seat in territory that's even friendlier to Republicans. The victory by Hurd, an attorney seen as a moderate alternative to Boebert, marked the second loss in a row for Frisch, a former City Council member from Aspen, who campaigned as a pragmatic businessman. The Associated Press declared Hurd the winner at 12:10 p.m. EST.

A postal worker and her friend have been arrested in connection with the forging of stolen mail ballots in Colorado in an alleged attempt to test the security of the state's voting system. Prosecutors in Mesa County announced the arrests of mail carrier Vicki Lyn Stuart and Sally Jane Maxedon on Wednesday. There were no attorneys listed as representing them in court records yet. Colorado overwhelmingly votes by mail. Election workers check the signatures on returned mail ballots against signatures on file for voters to ensure that the person who received the ballot is the one who returned it. Three of the forged ballots were not caught and were counted.

Republican Jeff Crank won election to a U.S. House seat representing Colorado on Wednesday. The political consultant and talk radio host will succeed Republican Rep. Doug Lamborn, who did not seek reelection, in a district that includes Colorado Springs. Crank defeated embattled Colorado GOP Chairman Dave Williams, who was endorsed by Donald Trump, in the primary. Williams, a former state lawmaker, tried to realign the state GOP with the far-right flank of the Republican party. Crank is a more traditional Republican but won Trump’s endorsement in the general election. The Associated Press declared Crank the winner at 5:21 p.m. EST.

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes practiced as usual Wednesday and plans to be ready for this weekend’s game against the Broncos. The news came two days after the two-time NFL MVP tweaked his left ankle while throwing a touchdown pass in a win over the Buccaneers on Monday night. Kansas City plays Denver on Sunday. Mahomes has plenty of experience nursing ankle injuries. The most high-profile one occurred during the playoffs two seasons ago, and he needed every bit of help recovering in time to face the Eagles in the Super Bowl. Mahomes tweaked it again in the first half but returned to lead the Chiefs to victory.

Abortion rights advocates lost on Florida, Nebraska and South Dakota ballot measure but prevailed in seven other states, including Missouri, where an amendment clears the way to undo one of the nation's strictest bans. By rejecting adding abortion rights to their state constitution, Florida voters kept a ban on abortion after the first six weeks of pregnancy in place. It’s the first time abortion rights groups have lost in a statewide ballot question since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade and ended a national right to abortion in 2022. Arizona, Colorado, Maryland, Montana and Nevada voters adopted such measures and New Yorkers passed an amendment to bar discrimination on the basis of “pregnancy outcomes.”

Republican Rep. Lauren Boebert won election to a U.S. House seat representing Colorado on Tuesday. Boebert, a a href="https://apnews.com/article/politics-united-states-government-lauren-boebert-colorado-548e31f15bcbd1929cfe25975c200421"polarizing figure/a known for her combative style, has represented the state’s 3rd District since 2021. But after a narrow victory in 2022, she opted to run in the neighboring 4th District, where incumbent Ken Buck decided not to seek reelection. The 4th District is the state's most conservative and covers much of eastern Colorado. Her victory follows a chaotic period in her life, including her a href="https://apnews.com/article/lauren-boebert-theater-vaping-186d748f754d87a7441268744b0076cf"ejection from a Denver theater/a for causing a disturbance. The Associated Press declared Boebert the winner at 11:18 p.m. EST.

Democratic Rep. Brittany Pettersen was reelected to a U.S. House seat representing Colorado on Tuesday. Pettersen served in the Colorado Legislature for a decade before winning the U.S. House seat in 2022. She replaced Rep. Ed Perlmutter, who didn't seek reelection after holding the 7th District seat for 16 years. Pettersen is the first woman to represent the expansive district that includes populous cities near Denver and rural communities stretching to southern Colorado. She was the first member of Congress from Colorado to call on President Joe Biden to drop his reelection bid. The Associated Press declared Pettersen the winner at 10:44 p.m. EST.

Colorado voters approved a state constitutional amendment on Tuesday enshrining protections for abortion. The measure repeals a ban on state and local funding for abortion and allows Medicaid and other government health insurance programs to cover abortion. Abortion already is legal in Colorado at all stages of pregnancy. Democratic Gov. Jared Polis in 2022 signed into law a bill guaranteeing access to reproductive care before and after pregnancy and banning local governments from imposing their own restrictions. Amending the state constitution requires the support of 55% of voters. The Associated Press declared the amendment was approved at 10:27 p.m. EST.
