During the next Data Use Club webinar, three speakers from the Science and Decision Support Team at the Atlas of Living Australia (ALA) will share their insights on how early surveillance and incursion detection of invasive species is a crucial component of an effective biosecurity system. Australia is a global leader in biosecurity, as is reflected in its biosecurity measures being among the most stringent and recognizable in the world.
Australia's native flora, fauna and environment have experienced some of greatest impacts from invasive species as a result of its history of accidental and deliberate introductions. Callum Waite, Erin Roger and Shandiya Balasubramaniam will describe their work in developing a biosecurity alert system prototype that relies on the experimental R package koel, which ingests species lists, applies spatial, temporal, and taxonomic filters to occurrence records from the ALA, and emails users updates on species of concern.
NOTE: This session will start at 9:00 CET to better accommodate our Australia-based speakers
