Fibroid Shrinks - Slate M Florin
INTRODUCTION
F
emale reproductive system growths or tumors are known as fibroids. They are referred to as uterine myomas, leiomyomas, or fibromas. They are tiny, closely packed tumors that develop from the uterus's normal muscle cells and fibrous connective tissue.
According to research, 20 to 50 percent of women who are of reproductive age have fibroids, albeit not all of them are recognized as such. In a few countries with between 30 and 77% of women, 80% of women nurse fibroids throughout their reproductive years, and around one-third of those tumors are large enough to be easily recognized. Ninety-nine percent of fibroid cases reveal benign tumors, which are non-cancerous tumors that do not enhance a woman's risk for uterine cancer and are not related with malignancies.
Fibroid varies in size, such that the small once may not be seen by the human eyes, and also big once can distort and enlarge the uterus. A woman can have single or multiple fibroids in her womb. But in some cases, multiple fibroids can grow the uterus so much that it reaches the rib cage.
Fig 1: Fibroids on the uterine wall
The above diagram clearly shows how fibroids grow on/in the uterus.
From the figure above;
When found in the hollow – inner space of the uterus, they are called Submucosal fibroids.
Fibroids found at the outer surface of the uterus are calledSubserosal fibroids.
Fibroids found within the myometrial wall are called Intramural. Fibroids.
When they are present in the three locations, they are generally referred to asmultiple fibroids.
As this type of fibroids will be discussed extensively in the subsequent chapters, the location of fibroid in the uterus is essential to determine clinical significance for a woman. The growth of fibroid can vary in sizes and numbers from woman to woman.
Fibroids are asymptomatic, but if symptomatic, the most common problems include pelvic pain, immoderate or abnormal vaginal bleeding, and stress on surrounding organs which include the bladder and intestines.
Additionally, fibroid increases the risk of infertility and miscarriage when not adequately treated. Those signs can affect the stability of lifestyles, specifically for the women in middle and underdeveloped nations where late attention to patients is a common occurrence.
In recent times, studies have shown a lifetime prevalence of among 20 – 40% of women’s population that are vulnerable to have both symptomatic and asymptomatic fibroid, and this may require expensive treatment or no intervention.
