SECTION II: YOUR PERSONALITY TYPE
This section will show you how your four dimension results combine to create your personality type.
DISCOVERING YOUR PERSONALITY TYPE
Your personality type code is based on the combination of your results for the four dimensions of personality. Because we are not sure of your styles on all of the dimensions, we are not sure of your fourletter code. We will show you all the personality types that may fit you, and it is up to you to decide which describes you best.
Below you will find profiles for each of the personality types that you should consider. Read over each of them carefully and think about which fits you best. You may see some of yourself in all of them, and none of them may fit you exactly. However, try to think about which comes the closest to describing you. If you can find a profile that is about 90% accurate or better, that is likely to be your personality type.
YOUR POSSIBLE PERSONALITY TYPES:
ENFJ: The Teacher
ENFJ IN A NUTSHELL

The Meaning of Life...no, seriously...this is probably it
Markus...synthesis is subject which individuated / divided into multiple subjects, which it views as objects, once more recognises all other objects as subjects ... as the self... ceases to do unto others as it would NOT want them to do unto them...now all objects 'others'... THESIS self only subject, no objects... single WILL...love of self and own pleasure...ANTI-THESIS is division ... Historical Dialectic / Universal dialectic resolves this situation ... as in Bhagavad Gita...You are I...that is you...I am that... no longer defines others as mere means to own ends...what you will for others you are willing for yourself, as you will be victim /beneficiary of what you will and actions this leads to...call it karma...university of life...this plane-et is anti-thesis...where we can re-learn the thesis, and re-integrate / synthesis...see one true light of all being in ALL objects...which are now treated / defined as subjects, whose pleasure and pain is now real to us...as real as our own...now we are not sole victim... love is love of pleasure / relief / comfort / security...we identify / associate a few others as 'valuable' as means to our own ends... we 'loved' things and people we perceived as providing, or offering, anticipating their provision, of pleasure, relief, comfort, security...as means to OUR ends...in some cases came to associate / identify WITH them AS representing OUR pleasure, relief, comfort, security...such as children...who are also ultimate expression of WILL to life, to experience...to pleasure...perhaps relief from boredom of Thesis state i.e single subject...which any human experiences as torture i.e not just mere boredom, but solitary confinement... man is wolf to man... cannibalism...slavery...exploitation...via direct physical violence /threat of violence...then later this 'war of all against all' waged, as the official MOSSAD motto puts it 'wage war by DECEPTION' ... in the form of religion the construction of a fake 'social reality'...via cradle to grave (and beyond) propaganda, general social conditioning to automatic servitude / obedience / acquiescence ... pyramidal structure of 'trickle down' benefits...and sticks of police / religion / withdrawal of benefits, imposition of pain...excommunication i.e solitary confinement... pyramidal structure means most talented at violence, and the system of religion etc i.e CONTROL rise to top...they fight among selves so fewer and fewer, until 'ONE WORLD ORDER' 'ONE WORLD DICTATORSHIP'... those at top actively keep those below as fearful, vulnerable, poor, weak, and ignorant as is consistent with them still being useful tools, as producers of value...with individuals selected to serve roles as police, priests, indoctrinators...etc...and offered benefits...so others will APE these 'top dogs' and 'fat cats' hoping to discover the secret to 'the money trough' i.e access to benefits, status, prestige, power, wealth, privileges...so will copy those above them in pyramid, and seek to climb higher... will to power...will to climb to top...pyramidal structure is representation of Anti-thesis...i.e treating all others as objects and mere means to ends of self...with 'top' of pyramid able to impose THEIR will upon all those below...using violence...such as physical violence, and deception, which is the violence of producing motives for action in others that do NOT serve their own interests, in order to trick them into serving YOUR purposes...your ends...achieving YOUR goals...increasing YOUR pleasure, comfort, relief, and security...YOUR power...so that YOUR WILL BE DONE ONE EARTH... as you had in heaven...in the original state...of thesis...where there WAS only ONE will...and it DID have total control...so now we are already moving towards a synthesis...i.e the will that becomes institutionalised in caste systems, class systems, systems of control, pyramidal structures, shows its own internal conflicts...conflict endemic...war of all against all...every subject seeking to assert itself as sole will...so that its will be done... objects, others, are the 'objectification' of the will ... multiplicity of wills emerged via self-division...originally only one, so egotism no problem...but now has to learn, by interactive determinism, to regulate own will...originally just one will, so no conflict of wills...no competition...now conflict endemic...other wills share same will to egotism...consequences of behavior i.e as you do unto others will be done unto you are teacher...interact...suffer as result of multiple egotisms...wills all seeking to dominate each other, treat each other as objects, as means to own ends...this suffering part of antithesis...no for or to or intention, just necessity, interactive determinism...no way around this...will divided into separate wills with same desire / will to exploit all others...suffering produces respect for each other’s rights...no way get away with original will...need to regulate own will...need to modify will...manage own will...as synthesis ... so went from one to multiple subjects, still acting same / willing same, then learn via consequences of interactions a.k.a 'suffering'...each sought to assert itself as only will / victim / beneficiary...but consequences were that 'man is wolf to man'...when saw self in children etc identified with, as subjects, as self...but otherwise rarely treated others as subjects...merely as objects...though all subjects objectification of will... Ascension device / liberation engine is synthesis...answer to 'optimal ethics generator'...which is reality...and we have been living in denial of this reality...attempting to exploit others, and escape exploitation...attempting to enslave and escape slavery...this is authentic optimism possible for life...probably not for THIS world, which is anti-thesis...pyramidal slave system...but THROUGH this system, by necessity, learn synthesis...adopt VEGAN lifestyle, which is objectification / institutionalization of that synthesis...by which we could reform this world , if majority make this transition, reject pyramidal structure, embrace slavery hoping to be slave master...so more about next lives...but eternity of these await...compared to limited time required to learn lesson in worlds / on plane-ets like this...this is not some form of masturbation / wishful thinking...attempt to reform this world probably doomed...heroic action is doomed...but hero transcends THIS world, even as this world destroys them...story of phoenix rising from ashes...has to self-immolate... you can only experience world you resonate with...raising tone to 'higher' frequency allows you to interact with 'higher' realities...in this world will suffer...others don't want you to escape...wish to keep you as their slave / object / means...expect disapproval, rejection, hatred, malice, victimisation, persecution, punishment, from contemporaries still stuck in old paradigm...stuck in anti-thesis...but when they finally destroy you, or you leave of own will, you will be resonating at 'higher' frequency, and thus 'tuned into' 'higher' experiences...they will be the representation / manifestation / objectification of the new 'higher' will you have 'synthesized' via the dialectical process.... expect all will learn, sooner or later...not about returning to golden age...but evolving...not revolution but evolution...historical dialectic has direction...evolutionary process...your will evolves...original selfish will egotistism no problem, until decided it wanted to interact with others / objects ... then came face to face with others with same will...conflict...suffering...learn necessity of balancing own desires / satisfaction / pleasure / relief / security with costs means would impose on others... legal codes / cultural norms / ways of being and seeing and defining all reflect this...VEGAN lifestyle is ONLY synthesis...only way to manage will, and institutionalize new will as new society, legal codes etc...this epiphany came as result of interacting with Schopenhauer's ideas...just starting to study his writings / arguments...still not sure where HE is going...but this is the conclusions I have drawn ... Schopey and me share many arguments and ideas...just he for some reason appears to think this must be the ONLY expression of the will...like his Hindu's and Buddhists etc...and thus reject life PER SE, in TOTO...whereas I don't see that as necessary...merely the rejection of THIS world, this sort of paradigm, and adopting the notion/ idea of the 'historical dialectic' vaguely Hegelian (I never really studied him) I can see the promise / logical possibility of evolution of the will...though it seems few people are willing, have suffered enough yet...but if SOME can manage it, and adopt a vegan lifestyle by choice, and will the golden rule as their choice, then given that we are all essentially divisions of the same original single will (monad), then it seems we are all going to become capable of that choice...it just may take some wills longer...they will continue to be new-born back in worlds like this, which reflect / are the objectification-manifestation of their will to enslave / abuse other sentient beings, and suffer as a result, until they learn their lesson...unless for some reason they find such experiences to their 'taste'...but from my point of view it is now about offering other sentient beings informed consent...informing them...allowing them to choose this slave society with its pyramidal structure, or to evolve / ascend / raise their 'tone' ... and the question of 'Those who walk away from Omelas' for me is whether we can just walk away, and leave the victim to their fate...transposed from that analogy to our context as being perhaps moot, as all 'objects' and 'subjects' and 'sentient beings' all are the same will, and all 'willing' this world, and thus their experience, while seeking to 'deny' the facts, and complain of being 'victims' when we are all perpetrators...all share the same will to exploit others...so then there are NO victims, as in Omelas, though all are victims of their OWN wills...what they will...this world and their experience being the consequence...just as the Cult of Judah draw all their power from the masses which will the same as the elites, only find themselves without the power to enforce THEIR wills UPON others, whereas the Cult of Judah have, via deception, and manipulation of impressions / perceptions, and through their financial instruments and propaganda, occupied the positions of power in this world, continually centralizing power in ever fewer hands, until they hold the reigns/ steering wheel and all the positions of power, and thus are in the position to impose THEIR will upon EVERYONE ELSE...as we are experiencing now with the COVID-19 hoax and 'states of emergency' suspension of human rights, legal rights, and civil rights associated with it, that it is being used to 'justify' and 'legitimate' in the name of 'national security' and 'protecting the public' and 'public health threats'...etc
My response to, and Schopenhauer Extracts from, ‘The World as Will and Representation’
Before me the only logical response to life was pessimism. The pessimism inherent in all religion. Which however defrauds everyone with false promises, and manages to misdirect most people from the secret truth which is hidden in plain sight, though kept secret by religious NLP, and thus kept ‘occult’ for all practical purposes.
Pay attention. Practice your best ZEN. Read what I am writing. What is written. Here. Now. It will be hard. It is such an alien concept, to actually read what is written. Not what you expect. Not through all the filters and conditioning and distortion, and pollution of your mind, which the world calls ‘education’ and ‘Socialisation’ and ‘religion’ and ‘culture’ and even ‘wisdom’ .
For I do not know of anyone else who has made the transition I have made. And can offer you the only rational optimism there can be, given The Realities Of Our Natures And The Natures Of Our Realities (TROONATNOOR). The only effective means to both liberation and emancipation from this world, and entry to a higher level of being that can be satisfying and rewarding.
I’ve explained the essential need for ‘conflict’ in my ‘(Re) Writing the Script of Your Life’. That guide is a reference work I wrote to train myself in the art of script and screenplay writing. But in the process of researching and writing it, I realised that in the context of ‘experience engines’, everything that applies to a great ‘story’, applies to the construction of all ‘experience engines’. All ‘lives’. And thus I have managed to clarify, just as the Cult of Judah New World Order is finalizing its master plan to enslave us all, by declaring, then repeatedly extending ‘states of emergency’ based on a ‘COVID-19 Hoax’, THE MEANING OF LIFE.
And not just the meaning of THIS world as we know it. THIS life as we know it. THESE lives as we know them. Which being under house arrest, as a forerunner of the ‘solitary confinement’ that awaits any adversary of The Cult of Judah, hopefully has brought to your attention. For you can’t escape to some distraction. You must face the facts that I will allow Schopenhauer to describe to you. You can find all manner of similar descriptions from other great geniuses in my TROONATNOOR publications, if you need ‘validation’ of what he describes.
I have a singular mind. I am a singular individual. Also of a very particular type. The type that end up being crucified, burned alive, tortured to death, dying in solitary confinement, and if not erased from history, then usually demonised by it.
I set out to find ‘The Meaning of Life’. It is as if this entire plane-et was a gaming platform, or classroom, for my individual instruction. For just as the end is near, like all the greatest heroes in all the greatest tragedies, I have been, and am about to be, utterly destroyed, but have transcended this world, and my destroyers. By having seized the Golden Fleece. The ring. The Holy Grail. And discovered the alchemical secrets. Open the portals. The Star Gates. Ascended even as my body remains to be tortured by the Cult of Judah that operates this ‘vale of tears’. The prison plane-et. This university of Karma. Burning away the impurities and purifying my true self of the SORT of WILL that is responsible for, and which this plane-et, this world, is the manifestation of, the institutionalization of, the ‘objectification’ of.
The answer seekers have been searching for is simple. While most sentient beings on this earth will simply the power to enforce their own will upon other sentient beings, and to ‘be-cause’, true seekers seek to reform this will, and thus reform the ‘1000 flowers of the soul’, and their own nature, and their future life manifestations that will be the natural product of this reformation. They seek to reform it in themselves. Then seek to reform it in others. And thus to reform this world. But they fail. As the will is too strong in most. And thus the world resists violently and cruelly the attempt to even hold a mirror up to it, to expose it to itself. At worst, like Schopenhauer, the would-be reformer will be ignored. Mocked and ridiculed at best. For at least most of their lives, if not the entirety of it. Perhaps in later ages they will be praised as geniuses. But more likely they will be, if remembered at all, demonised by all official histories.
I sought to affirm life. I sought an affirmation of life. Being naively and perhaps narcissistically hopeful that I could find a solution where all others had failed. In fact I DID find a way to work towards an affirmation of even THIS life. THIS world. Read my novel ‘Veil of Ignorance’ to discover the best possible response to THIS world. However even THIS affirmation was going to be conditional on obtaining the power to realise the plan described in it. And this world doesn’t hand out power to people with the best intentions. Only to those with the very worst. That most closely reflect the ‘Will’ that this plane-et, this world, is the objectification of, in the first place.
If this really were the only, and so far, best of all possible worlds that all the intelligence this reality had ever managed to produce was capable of, then my own ‘Protocols’ represented the optimalisation of life. Lacking on the power to realise them. To either convince and persuade others to join me in realising them. Or to force others to comply with them.
But this world is clearly the objectification, the manifestation, of a particular TYPE of will. A short term, egotistical, unenlightened, selfish, cruel, heartless, will that is indifferent to the suffering it imposes on other wills. Or at least does not care enough about the suffering it imposes to limit itself. It seeks to ‘be-cause’. Magic and religion promised its practitioners the power to ‘be cause’ .The Cult of Judah learned the true art of alchemy, called ‘finance’ and ‘paper money’ and ‘fractional reserve banking’. It learned how to create entirely illusory ‘social realities’ using NLP and propaganda. So it has come to inherit this world. To impose its will upon all other sentient beings. So that ‘its will be done, on earth’.
So I have zero chances of reforming this world. I don’t have the power to demonstrate the superior alternative I have to offer.
It would seem that the role of the hero is not to transform the world they inherited. But through attempting to do this, to transform themselves. Their SELF. Which is no more or less than the representation of their WILL. Their desire. Their intention.
Thus the heroic story is a tragedy. The phoenix must burn up all its impurities, to emerge, renewed, in its higher form. To be purged of those elements of its WILL that were holding it back down. Which had attracted it, and held it close to, worlds like this one. Like gravity. With the gravity drawing on those elements of its WILL which corresponded to those that that world, that plane-et, was the manifestation of. The objectification of. And having been purged of those elements of its WILL, through the fire of this world, the ‘punishment’ this world’s beings impose of the true ‘seeker’ and ‘teacher’, it is now free to ASCEND and escape this world. For those elements of its WILL, of THE WILL, which the plane-et, which this world, attracted, and held it close, and pulled it down, WITH, are no longer part of its nature. Gravity has no power over this enlightened WILL.
It is a will that has honestly answered my ‘Optimal Ethics Generator’ question. My ‘Ascension Device’. My ‘Liberation Engine’. After having educated itself about the consequences of what it had been, up to now, willing. For itself. And thus for all other sentient beings. And thus itself. That is the true ‘dialectic’. Thesis. Anti-Thesis. Synthesis.
As Obadiah warns ‘For as you do unto others, so shall be done unto you’. As you WILL for others, so shall THEY will for you. The world is the objectification of your collective WILLS. The manifestation of those wills. The REPRESENTATION of those wills.
And so my optimism of course does not belong to THIS world. To this plane-et. This objectification of the collective WILL of almost all its inhabitants.
It necessarily belongs to the higher plane-ets. Where those beings who have purged their WILL of the toxic elements, the impurities if you like, are free to experience lives which are the representation OF their higher WILL. They have been purified, like gold, of their ‘impurities’. Those elements which hold us back. Keep us down. That attach us to this world. Where like attracts like. The objectification of these elements of our will which this world represents, attracts the same elements within us. Holding us fast. Trapping us. Binding us to this ‘vale of tears’. Which I will let Schopenhauer describe for you in a moment.
But oh, yes, the good news. The ‘meaning of life’ I began this quest to discover. And did discover. For really all I needed to do was look in the mirror. Accept responsibility. Honestly admit what was going on. And the part I played in it all.
Normally when we ‘die’ it is like we walked far enough towards the horizon that we could no longer see anyone else, nor they us. Like a sun setting on the horizon. Appearing to disappear into the dark depths. We abandon one experience engine only to immediately inhabit the next one. Like taking off an old set of clothes, and putting on some new ones. Life is eternal and without limits. Life disposes of ‘lives’ as we do of candy wrappings, drink bottles, or worn out socks. Indifferently.
The ‘new’ life we manifest as will represent the current state of our WILL at the time of our death. WHAT we were willing, will be objectified in our new lives. The new experience engine will reflect our WILL. So if we continue to WILL the same things, we will continually find ourselves ‘new-incarnated’ as similar beings, on similar sorts of plane-ets, of worlds, to the one we presently find ourselves on. In the same condition and state we presently find ourselves. And are soon to find ourselves in. When we wake up to the facts. The world our own wills have produced. Manifested. This Cult of Judah prison plane-et. This Cult of Judah slave plane-et.
What YOU must do is reform YOUR WILL. Using my ‘Optimal Ethic Generator’. Which I now see as a sort of ‘tuning’ device. Like a tuning fork or guitar tuner. It is the phoenix’s fire. It is self-immolation. For only YOU can purge your own WILL of the ‘impurities’ that are holding you back from ascension and liberation. To arise anew. Purified. Pure gold. The impurities burned off. Free to ascend. To soar.
Here is your true history. We were all one WILL. And we willed our own pleasure. Which required we generate ‘Experience Engines’. ‘Gaming Platforms’. Worlds. Plane-ets. Objects to interact with. Other beings to interact with. So we divided our ‘SELF’ into many selves. Each with the same WILL. And each perceiving the others as being ‘objects’ and ‘individual selves’. NOT the self. Not any more. This is a pre-requisite to the GAME we set out to produce. To experience pleasure. Excitement. Fun. Joy. Adventure. To PLAY. In that spirit of playfulness.
Only we all shared the same WILL. We all perceived of others as OBJECTS separate from ourselves. Which we could employ, could USE, as means to our own ends. Basically treat as objects. As slaves. As servants.
So we faced this intrinsic, endemic, conflict. The conflict of WILL. With each WILL attempting to enslave the other. To trick it. To deceive it. To control it. To get it to behave how it suited itself. To think and feel and act in ways convenient to itself. To be its slave. Its servant. A mere means to the satisfaction of its own WILL. A mere means to its own pleasure, relief, and security.
But of course each WILL shared this WILL. This will to power. This will to abuse power. So each became the enemy of each. The would-be slave-master of each. No one could trust another, for fear that they would employ deception and deceit upon them. To bend them to their OWN WILL. For fear they would attempt to enslave them. Rape them. Steal from them. Enslave them.
So ‘man is wolf to man’. On this plane-et. On this world. As a result of this. The beings wear masks. Disguises. Because all-out attack will lead to ‘a war of all against all’. So this war was fought secretly. According to the current official MOSSAD motto ‘Make war by deception’. The slaves would rather die than serve. So they must be tricked into imagining they are free, and acting to serve their OWN WILL. Rather than their masters’ WILL. So they will not only work hard, long, and make sacrifices, and take risks, in the service of their slave masters, but even reproduce themselves.
I’ve outlines the ‘pyramidal’ structure this resulted in, in my other TROONATNOOR publications. The ‘social reality’. The finance system. The religions. The nations. And finally the Cult of Judah One World Order.
The WILL is unwilling to face facts. It is stubborn. It persists in attempting to have ‘its will be done on earth’ as it was in ‘heaven’. At the beginning. When it was just ONE will. And no conflict existed. As there were no other wills to come into conflict WITH. But with division into a multiplicity of wills, the conflict was inevitable.
So we had the thesis. I WILL. I am CAUSE. Which CAUSED and CREATED and WILLED itself to divide, and form a multiplicity of wills. Each of which was identical. Each of which shared that SAME WILL. And thus conflict was born. And the world as we know it. Which had its anti-thesis implicitly bound up and built into it. The fact that each WILL would continue to act as if it was the only will. The only experiencer. The only possible victim or beneficiary. And so each SUBJECT would treat each other subject as a mere OBJECT. A means to its own ends.
The result is this world, as we know it, of suffering. Which Schopenhauer so brilliantly describes.
Only for some reason Schopenhauer , unlike myself, sees no way out of this suffering, other than renouncing life PER SE. In TOTO. Absolutely.
Which some would see as a collapse of the monad back into itself. A retreat BACK to the original state. A withdrawal from the world. From individuation. Back into ‘the Bosom of Abraham’ or ‘Brahma’. A re-unification of the divided WILLs back into one will. Which is bound to be ‘empty’. As empty as the Christian ‘heaven’. And which begs the question. For the WILL itself decided to CHANGE. To divide. Hoping for pleasure. For experience. For fun and games. It was BORED. Hmm.
So up to now the most brilliant minds best response to the situation our WILL had generated, was to reject life in Toto. Absolutely. Throw out the baby with the bath water. Say no to life. Seeing no possibility of ‘reforming’ life as we know it. Perfecting it. At least optimizing it. Though many fools have proposed ‘utopian’ visions based on their own WILL. Utopias that THEY found appealing and suited THEM. Their WILL.
Would it be right to just walk away from Omelas? Or do we have an obligation to go back and destroy it, and save that one victim? Also note that ‘The Law of Manu’ is the oldest surviving written legal code, and it clearly states that all that any individual can claim a just and legal right to is the products of their own labor. And compare this with the Cult of Judah’s laws which claim that the ‘Jews’ have a right to ALL the products of the labor of EVERYONE ELSE.
My ‘Optimal Ethics Generator’ is the solution. It must be voluntarily entered into as a contract. To honestly seek out to discover the facts about this world, and our own responsibility for the suffering of others, and thus ourselves, and then to agree to change our own behavior. Our own WILL. To WILL a very different sort of plane-et. A very different sort of world. One defined by justice FOR ALL sentient beings.
We don’t have any ‘super hero’ or ‘god’ or ‘philosopher king’ to enforce that ‘social contract’. WE have to WILL ourselves a NEW WILL. To WILL our selves new SELVES. And thus new plane-ets. New experience engines.
The SYNTHESIS is this reform of our own WILL, by ourselves. WE must WILL this. And what we WILL, will automatically come into being. In next lives. We will manifest our new WILL in our next lives. And THAT is the OPTIMISM I have to offer. That transcends the pessimism that belongs to THIS world, and our CURRENT WILL.
Whatever the Cult of Judah has in store for us, we are free to choose to WILL an entirely different experience for ourselves. In next lives. Experiences that are satisfying and rewarding. Worlds and plane-ets and lives that CAN be rationally AFFIRMED.
By rejecting EVERYTHING that this CULT OF JUDAH stands for. Remember they are merely the manifestation of our own individual, and thus collective, WILL. They represent our own will to abuse power. To exploit others as mere means to our own ends. Their ideology of Semitism, outlined in their official ‘religious’ texts, states this clearly. That they define only THEMSELVES as subjects. And all others are mere objects. To be used by them, as mere means to their own ends. They are the mirror this plane-et holds up to us. If we dare look into it. With courage. And honesty. We can see ourselves reflected back. And shrink back in horror. And REJECT that WILL. And WILL the sort of worlds we will then become WORTHY of. Deserve. And be capable of sustaining.
Until WE WILL these changes, we will NOT be able to escape the repeating cycles of history. We will live in a ‘war of all against all’. Where ‘man is wolf to man’. The war might be waged by deception, as the Cult of Judah are operating right now, in YOUR occupied nation. Or it might explode into open warfare, as it has repeatedly done in the past. The slavery might be open and legal, as it often has been in the past, or achieved via deception, as it is being managed right now. So that the slaves do not realise they ARE slaves. So they imagine they are free. And work hard for the benefit of the Cult of Judah elites. And reproduce more slaves for them to exploit, and appropriate value from.
My TROONATNOOR publications can enlighten you of the ‘impurities’ of your current WILL, and allow you to REFORM YOUR WILL, and thus ‘ascend’ and gain liberation from this world, which I will now let my buddy Schopey describe for you. Just to clarify things. In case you missed anything. And never really stopped to think. Let alone brave the courage it would take to SEE this world, the one YOUR WILL has produced, for what it IS.
I will now hand this lecture over to my good friend Schopenhauer
That human life must be some kind of mistake is sufficiently proved by the simple observation that man is a compound of needs which are hard to satisfy; that their satisfaction achieves nothing but a painless condition in which he is only given over to boredom; and that boredom is a direct proof that existence is in itself valueless, for boredom is nothing other than the sensation of the emptiness of existence. For if life, in the desire for which our essence and existence consists, possessed in itself a positive value and real content, there would be no such thing as boredom: mere existence would fulfil and satisfy us. As things are, we take no pleasure in existence except when we are striving after something – in which case distance and difficulties make our goal look as if it would satisfy us (an illusion which fades when we reach it) – or when engaged in purely intellectual activity, in which case we are really stepping out of life so as to regard it from outside, like spectators at a play. Even sensual pleasure itself consists in a continual striving and ceases as soon as its goal is reached. Whenever we are not involved in one or other of these things but directed back to existence itself we are overtaken by its worthlessness and vanity and this is the sensation called boredom.
Yet what a difference there is between our beginning and our end! We begin in the madness of carnal desire and the transport of voluptuousness, we end in the dissolution of all our parts and the musty stench of corpses. And the road from the one to the other too goes, in regard to our well-being and enjoyment of life, steadily downhill: happily dreaming childhood, exultant youth, toil-filled years of manhood, infirm and often wretched old age, the torment of the last illness and finally the throes of death.
When an obstacle is placed between WILL and its temporary goal, we call this inhibition suffering; on the other hand, the achievement of its goal is satisfaction, contentment, happiness.
All striving comes from lack, from a dissatisfaction with one’s condition, and is thus suffering as long as it is not satisfied; but no satisfaction is lasting; instead, it is only the beginning of a new striving.
We see striving everywhere inhibited in many ways, struggling everywhere; and thus always as suffering; there is no final goal of striving, and therefore no bounds or end to suffering.
Suffering becomes more apparent the more completely the will appears.
Pain reaches its highest pitch in human beings, and even there continues to grow in proportion to cognition and intelligence; the man in whom genius dwells suffers the most.
Ecclesiastes: ‘He that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow.’
Tischbein appeared to want to remind us that animals and humans are not as different as we want to pretend. He illustrates this with a drawing in which the top half of the drawing shows women whose children are being taken from them, and who, in different groupings and attitudes, express deep maternal pain, anguish and despair in a variety of ways; the bottom half of the drawing shows, in the very same arrangements and groupings, sheep whose lambs are being taken away; every human head, every human position of the top half of the page has a corresponding analogy among the animals.
Existence, seen only from the formal side, is a continuous plunging of the present into the dead past, a continuous dying. The life of our body is only a constantly checked dying, a constant postponement of death: finally, even our mental activity is a continuously delayed boredom. Every breath we take wards off the perpetual onslaught of death; in this way, we struggle against death at every moment, and again at greater intervals, with every meal, every sleep, every time we warm ourselves, etc. Death has to win in the end: because we have been cast into death ever since birth, and it is only playing with its prey for a while before devouring it.
In the meantime, we go on with our lives with considerable interest and deep concern for as long as possible, just as someone might blow as big a soap bubble as they can, and try to get it to last for as long as possible, although being absolutely certain that it is going to burst.
Looking at the part of nature that is devoid of cognition, we already saw its inner essence to be a continual striving, without goal and without rest, and this is much more evident when we consider animals and human beings. Willing and striving constitute their entire essence, fully comparable to an unquenchable thirst. But the basis of all willing is need, lack, and thus pain, which is its primordial destiny by virtue of its essence. If on the other hand it lacks objects to will, its former objects having been quickly 368 dispelled as too easily achieved, it is seized with a terrible emptiness and boredom: i.e. its essence and its being itself become an intolerable burden to it. Thus, its life swings back and forth like a pendulum between pain and boredom;31 in fact, these are the ingredients out of which it is ultimately composed. This has also been very fancifully expressed by saying that after people had placed all the pain and suffering in hell, nothing was left for heaven except boredom. But the perpetual striving that constitutes the essence of every appearance of the will obtains its first and most universal foundation at the higher levels of objectivation from the fact that the will appears there as a living body with the iron command to be fed; and this commandment gets its force from the fact that this body is nothing other than the objectified will to life. A human being, as the most perfect objectivation of that will, is for that reason also the neediest of all beings: he is concrete willing and needing through and through, he is the concretion of a thousand needs. He stands with these upon the earth, left to his own devices, uncertain about everything except his needs and wants:32 accordingly and for the most part, the whole of human life is consumed by worries about how to go on existing in the face of such difficult demands, worries that assert themselves afresh every day. Directly connected to this is the second demand, the propagation of the race. At the same time the human being is threatened on all sides by the most diverse dangers, and it takes constant vigilance to escape them. The world as will, second consideration 339 He goes on his way with a cautious step, looking around anxiously because he is accosted by a thousand accidents and a thousand enemies. Thus it was in the wild, thus is it in civilized life; he has no security: Oh, in what darkness of life, in what great dangers, We pass our time, as long as it lasts! Lucretius, II.15a,33 For the vast majority of people, life itself is nothing but a constant struggle for this same existence, with the certainty of losing it in the end. But what enables them to survive this miserable struggle is not so much a love of life as it is the fear of death, which nonetheless stands inexorably in the 369 background, and can step forward at any moment. – Life itself is a sea full of reefs and maelstroms that a human being takes the greatest care and caution to avoid; he uses all his efforts and ingenuity to wend his way through, while knowing that even if he is successful, every step brings him closer to the greatest, the total, the inescapable and irreparable shipwreck, and in fact steers him right up to it, – to death: this is the final goal of the miserable journey and worse for him than all the reefs he managed to avoid. Now it is well worth noting right away that on the one hand, the pains and sufferings of life can easily grow to the point where even death (the whole point of life being the avoidance of death) becomes desirable, and people freely embrace it; and again on the other hand, that as soon as people get some respite from needs and sufferings, boredom is so close that they need to take up some pastime. What keeps all living things busy and in motion is the striving to exist. But when existence is secured, they do not know what to do: that is why the second thing that sets them in motion is a striving to get rid of the burden of existence, not to feel it any longer, ‘to kill time’, i.e. to escape boredom.34 We see this in almost everyone who is secured from worries and wants; once they have rid themselves of all other burdens, they become burdens to themselves, and see every hour that passes as a gain, which is to say everything that shortens the very life that they have spent all their energies so far in sustaining for as long as possible. Boredom is certainly not an evilb to be taken lightly: it will ultimately etch lines of true despair onto a face. It makes beings with as little love for each other as humans nonetheless seek each other with such intensity, and in this way it becomes the source of sociability.35 For reasons of a Qualibus in tenebris vitae, quantisque periclis | Degitur hocc’ aevi, quodcunque est! [Lucretius, De rerum natura (On the Nature of Things), II. 15–16] b Uebel 340 The World as Will and Representation political prudence, public precautions are always taken against it, as against other universal calamities; that is because this evil can drive people to the greatest licentiousness as much as its opposite extreme, famine: bread and circusesa is what the people need. Philadelphia’s strict penitentiary system 370 makes boredom into an instrument of punishment, through loneliness and inactivity: and it is so horrible that it has already driven convicts to suicide. Just as need is the constant scourge of the people, boredom is the scourge of the respectable world. In middle-class life it is represented by Sunday, just as want is represented by the other six days of the week.36 Absolutely every human life flows between willing and attaining. The nature of every desireb is pain: attainment quickly gives rise to satiety: the goal was only apparent: possession takes away the stimulus: the desire, the need re-emerges in a new form: if not, then what follows is dreariness, emptiness, boredom, and the struggle against these is just as painful as the struggle against want. – For desire and satisfaction to follow each other without too long or too short an interval in between reduces the suffering caused by both to the smallest quantity, and constitutes the happiest course through life. Apart from this, what we might call the best part of life and the purest joy it affords, is pure cognition to which all willing is foreign: pleasure in beauty, a true delight in art; this experience lifts us out of real existence and changes us into disinterestedc spectators. But because it requires rare talents, it is only granted to extremely few people, and even to these it is only like a passing dream: moreover, the higher intellectual powers these people possess make them susceptible to much greater suffering than duller minds could feel, and they feel lonely among beings markedly different from themselves: this offsets their advantage. But purely intellectual pleasures are inaccessible to the vast majority of people; most people are almost entirely incapable of experiencing the joy that lies in pure cognition: they are completely given over to willing. So if anything is to gain their sympathy and interest them, it must (and this is already clear from the meaning of the word) somehow arouse their will, even if its relation to the will is distant and merely theoretical; but the will can never be kept entirely out of play, because for most people, existence is much more about willing than about cognition: action and reaction are their only element. The na¨ıve expression of this situation can be gleaned from trivialities and everyday occurrences:d 371 a panem et Circenses [from Juvenal, Satires X, 81] b Wunsch c antheilslose d Erscheinungen The world as will, second consideration 341 for instance, people write their names on popular sites that they visit, in order to react to the place and have an effect on it since it does not have an effect on them. Further, it is not easy for them to just look at a strange and rare animal, but they have to annoy it, tease it, and play with it, just to experience action and reaction; but this need to excite the will is seen most particularly in the invention and pursuit of card games, which really reveal the truly deplorable side of humanity. But whatever nature or good fortune might have done, whoever you are and whatever you possess, you cannot ward off the pain that is essential to life: Peleus’ son groaned aloud, lifting his eyes to heaven.a And again: I was indeed the son of Zeus, son of Kronos, and nonetheless Endured unspeakable misery.b,37 The perpetual efforts to banish suffering do nothing more than alter its form. This is originally lack, need, worries over how to sustain life. If (and this is extremely difficult) we are successful in driving out pain in this form, then it immediately appears in a thousand others, varying, according to age and circumstances, as sex drive, passionate love, envy, jealousy, hatred, anxiety, ambition, greed, illness, etc., etc. If it ultimately cannot find any other form in which to appear, then it comes in the sad grey garments of satiety and boredom, and we then try hard to fend it off. Even if we finally succeed in driving these away, it can hardly be done without letting the pain back in one of its previous forms and so beginning the dance all over again; because every human life is thrown back and forth between pain and boredom. As depressing as this discussion is, I will also call attention to an aspect of the situation that offers consolation, and perhaps even allows 372 us to achieve a Stoic indifference towards our own, present troubles. This is because our impatience with these troubles comes primarily from the fact that we recognize them as accidental, introduced by a chain of causes that could easily have been otherwise. For instance, we do not tend to worry about immediately necessary and completely universal troubles, e.g. the necessity of age and death and a host of daily inconveniences. It is rather the thought that the circumstances bringing some suffering to us a
(Pelides autem ejulavit, intuitus in coelum latum.) [Homer, Iliad, XXI, 272] (Jovis quidem filius eram Saturnii; verum aerumnam | Habebam infinitam.) [Homer, Odyssey, XI, 620] 342 The World as Will and Representation in particular are in some way accidental – this is what gives them their sting. But when we have recognized that pain as such is essential to life and unavoidable, and the only element of chance is the shape or form in which pain presents itself, that our present suffering occupies a space which, if vacated, would be immediately filled by a new suffering that is being kept at bay by the present one, that fate cannot really affect us in essential matters – if we have recognized all this, then this reflection, if it becomes an active conviction, could bring about a significant measure of Stoic equanimity and lessen our anxious concern for our own well-being. But in fact such a capable mastery of reason over the immediate feelings of suffering is seldom, if ever, to be found. Incidentally, this discussion of the unavoidability of pain, of how one type displaces another, how the new one is drawn in by the departure of the old, might even lead to the paradoxical though not unreasonable hypothesis that the amount of pain essential to every individual is predetermined by his nature, and this amount cannot fall short or be exceeded, however much the form of suffering might change. This would mean that a person’s suffering or well-being would not be determined externally at all, but instead it would be a function of that pre-set amount or arrangement. It certainly might increase or decrease at different times due to physical constitution, but overall it would remain the same and be nothing other than what is called temperament, or more precisely, as Plato expressed it in the first book of the Republic, the degree to which someone might be or i.e. of an easy or difficult nature.a 373 – A familiar experience speaks in favour of this hypothesis, the experience that great suffering makes us incapable of feeling lesser sufferings, as does the opposite experience, that in the absence of great suffering even the smallest annoyances pester and annoy us; but even more, experience also shows us that if a great misfortune – the sort that we shudder even to imagine – were really to take place, nonetheless, as soon as we had withstood the first sufferings, our frame of mind would remain largely the same. The converse is true as well, that after we achieve a long-desired happiness, generally and in the long run we do not feel markedly better and more content than we did before. Only the moment in which the change takes place touches us with any unusual strength as deep distress or sheer joy; but both evaporate quickly, because they rest on an illusion. They do not come from any current pleasure or pain, but only from our anticipation that a new future has opened up for us. The suffering or joy can take on such exaggerated forms a leichten oder schweren Sinnes The world as will, second consideration 343 only because it is on loan from the future, and consequently cannot last. – According to our present hypothesis, feelings of suffering or well-being resemble cognition in that the greater part is subjective and determined a priori. We could cite as another proof the fact that people’s high or low spirits are obviously not determined by external circumstances, by wealth or status, since we encounter at least as many happy faces among the poor as among the rich. Further, the motives that give rise to suicide are so wildly different that we cannot cite any source of unhappiness that would be great enough to lead to suicide in any character with much probability; and few sources are trivial enough that something just as trivial has not already caused suicides. Now even if we do not always experience the same degree of cheerfulness or sadness, we will attribute it on this view not to any change in external circumstances but rather to our inner condition, our physical constitution. Because when there is an actual (though of course only temporary) increase in our cheerfulness, even to the point of joyfulness, it tends to emerge without any external occasion.38 Of course, we frequently think that our pain comes only from particular, external 374 conditions, and we are visibly oppressed or saddened only by these: we then believe that if only these conditions were removed the greatest contentment would necessarily follow. But this is an illusion. The overall quantity of our suffering and well-being is, according to our hypothesis, subjectively determined at every point in time. In this respect, the external motive for sadness plays the same role that a blister remedy does on the body, drawing together all the bad humours that would have otherwise been scattered. If it were not for this particular external cause of suffering, the suffering that is grounded in our essence for a certain period of time (and is therefore irremovable) would be scattered in a hundred different places and appear in the form of a hundred little bouts of moodiness and depression over things we now overlook completely, because our capacity for pain has already been reached by this major source of evil, and this has concentrated all the otherwise diffused sufferings into one point. This corresponds to the observation that when a fortunate outcome lifts a central, oppressive worry from our chests, its place is immediately filled by another worry, whose entire content had already been present, but could not enter consciousness as a worry because there was no room for it there; the content of the worry remained on the extreme horizon of consciousness as a dark, unobserved, and obscure shape. But now that there is room, this ready-made content comes right in and ascends the throne of the ruling worry of the day: even if its content is much more meagre than that of the evaporated worry, it still knows how to puff itself up so that it seems to 344 The World as Will and Representation equal it in size, and so it can fill the whole throne as the main worry of the day.39 Excessive joy and acute pain are always and only to be found in the same person: because they determine each other reciprocally, and are also both conditioned by great mental activity. As we have already found, they are not produced merely by what is present, but rather by an anticipation of the future. But since pain is essential to life and the degree of pain is determined by the nature of the subject, sudden alterations, which always come from 375 outside, cannot really alter the degree of pain; so immoderate joy or pain is always based on an error and a delusion: and consequently both of these mental over-exertions can be avoided through insight. Immoderate joy (exultatio, insolens laetitia) is always based on the delusion that you have found something in life that is not really there, namely lasting gratification of your agonizing, constantly reoccurring desires or worries. People must inevitably be brought around later from each particular delusion of this type, and when it fades they must pay for it with sufferings as intense as the joys caused by its appearance. In this respect it is just like a height that you can only get down from by falling; that is why it should be avoided: and every sudden, excessive pain is just such a fall from this sort of height, the disappearance of this sort of delusion, and thus is conditioned by it. Consequently, both could be avoided if people were always able to survey things with perfect clarity and in a broader context, and were constantly on guard against painting things in the colours we only wish they had. The principal aim of Stoic ethics is to free the mind from all such delusions and their consequences, and give it an imperturbable equanimity instead. Horace is filled with this insight in the well-known ode: Always remember to stay calm in times of trouble and in happier times to keep a heart that controls the overpowering joy.a But for the most part we close our eyes to the recognition – which is like bitter medicine – that suffering is essential to life, and thus does not flow in upon us from the outside, but that all people carry within themselves an unconquerable source of suffering. We always look instead for an external, particular cause as a sort of pretext for the pain that will never go away; like free men who set up an idol in order to have a master. We strive tirelessly from desire to desire, and even when every achieved satisfaction proves nevertheless to be unsatisfying (however much it promised), quickly a Aequam memento rebus
