CLEVELAND -- Guerschon Yabusele, a 2016 first-round pick of the Boston Celtics, underwent surgery recently to remove bone spurs from the top of both feet and will not participate in summer league, according to a league source.

Yabusele, the 16th overall pick in last year’s draft, spent much of his first professional season stashed in China. He came stateside in March and latched on with the Maine Red Claws, Boston’s D-League affiliate.

Yabusele appeared in seven games for Maine, including five postseason appearances. The 6-foot-8, 265-pound big man, affectionately nicknamed The Dancing Bear by Celtics assistant coach Micah Shrewsberry last summer, averaged 12.8 points and 5.4 rebounds over 27.3 minutes per game during Maine's playoff run.

The 21-year-old Yabusele, a native of Dreux, France, could find his way onto Boston’s roster for the 2017-18 season if the team has the available roster space to carry him.

Boston’s front office has been high on Yabusele’s potential, especially given his athleticism in such a big frame. The Celtics have another first-round pick Ante Zizic, the 23rd overall pick in last year’s draft, stashed in Turkey.

Zizic is expected to join the Celtics once his Turkish season is complete and should play in summer league. Yabusele will be able to resume basketball activities this summer and is expected to be ready for the start of training camp.
