Abstract
Digital technologies increasingly permeate research and education in the arts, humanities, and social sciences. Their digital environment expands continuously, and the next evolutionary step is imminent as the field embraces the opportunities of modern network technologies and social software. Accessibility of primary data; embedded in a web of supplementary material; availability of generic tools for analysis and supporting the scientific process; collaboration between scholars across disciplines – all these features are part and parcel of the emerging „e-Humanities“. Virtual research environments are composed of three layers: research, research infrastructure, and the basic infrastructure. This article aims to specify these layers and define potential roles and responsibilities within them, with a special view at a research infrastructure for the e-Humanities.

Abstract
Regensburg University Library assumes the function of a role model among the new generation of academic libraries founded after 1960. Since its foundation, the library has continuously participated in the introduction and implementation of new library working models and has developed cooperative concepts for the whole library community. Models such as the Regensburg Classification Scheme or the Electronic Journals Library have strongly influenced our modern information society.

Abstract
GEO-LEO, the Virtual Library for earth sciences and mining, provides an integrated search within library catalogues, citation databases and fulltext repositories. With the portal the libraries at Freiberg and Göttingen (SUB) expose and make accessible the holdings of their special subject collections, funded by the German Research Foundation. Additional services comprising an email-alert and a disciplinary repository make the virtual library a valueable tool for scientist, students and other users interested in earth sciences and mining. Experiences made by the GEO-LEO project and also the software developments can be contributed to other virtual library projects.

Abstract
Three strategies are focused: First the representation of bookshelves such as the DeweyBrowser of OCLC, second the representation of spatiality such as the „Infosystem“ of the Philological Library of the Freie Universität Berlin, and third the communicative facet such as the platform LibraryThing. An adequate website architecture, information visualization and elements of library 2.0 can contribute to explore spaces virtually and accentuate real reading rooms.

Abstract
Public sector reforms and the scarcity of resources provided by the funding institutions are regarded as the main drivers for academic and public libraries' acceptance towards management instruments and methods. So far, however, the acceptance of these methods has only been documented in case reports by single libraries. From October 2006 to February 2007, head librarians from 99 libraries nationwide were surveyed by telephone regarding their use of and attitudes and expectations towards management instruments. The study was conducted by the Research Centre for Library Management, Evaluation and Organizational Development at Stuttgart Media University with the help of graduate students in Library and Information Science.

Abstract
The intensive occupation with the quality development and assurance of library services, principally addresses the expectations on management efficiency to enhance customer loyalty and retention and how these expectations may be relevant to libraries. Once the terminology for these expectations has been established, various aspects of the individual areas of expectation are set out in detail on the completion of which the basics of expectation management for libraries may be examined.

Abstract
In Germany the population and the birth rate is declining, while the lifespan is increasing. An obsolescence of employees is already apparent and will be accelerated in the next ten by twenty years. Hiring freezes and job loss could cause a shortage of personnel and a loss of know-how. Libraries should implement an ageing-based human resource management to stay innovative and highly productive.

Abstract
In Australia, the library and information services (LIS) sector has become increasingly aware that people are the key drivers in the profession and that a strong professional future will depend on the effective management of workforce issues. The paper discusses some of the findings from an Australian research initiative, the neXus census, which examines the current LIS workforce.

Abstract
Institutions of all kind present themselves, in the broadest sense, in a multimedia based style. Apart from the Internet, the image video plays an important role in presenting an institution in an effective manner. Quite attractive results may be obtained by paying attention to some relative easy to follow rules. Within the framework of various projects, LIS-students at the Stuttgart Media University (HdM) implemented multimedia based presentations for different institutions. This contribution offers tips and tricks for the production of image videos and other multimedia based products as well as the presentation of possible applications. Furthermore, new ways of information transfer and library marketing will be given.

Abstract
Accessibility of web pages has been a matter of concern for quite some time as well as accessibility of buildings. There are a considerable number of legal issues to be observed when planning a library. However, there is also an unhappy lack of respective budgets. This forces libraries to engage in funding initiatives, which does not always result in satisfactory outcomes. For blind and visually impaired patrons the situation has changed, however, over the last few years because of technological innovations. Personal reading services have been replaced by automatic ones.
