A new volume of the Netherlands Yearbook for History of Art is always a cause for celebration, even more so when it foregrounds #WomenInArt. Simply called “Women”, volume 74 of the Yearbook focuses on female roles in the art and society of the Netherlands. Edited by Elizabeth Alice Honig, Judith Noorman and Thijs Weststeijn, this beautifully produced book is dedicated to “all the women who have paved the way, opened doors, and were overlooked in the process.” https://lnkd.in/g78_iC9i

This recent brilliant artwork by Marwan Shahin resonates perfectly with my piece on „Colonialism and Qur‘an“ published in the edited volume „The European Qurʾān Encounters with the Holy Text of Islam from the Ninth to the Twentieth Century“ edited by Jan Loop, Naima AFIF and Weltmuseum Wien and published with De Gruyter Brill. The first sentence of my essay says: „Napoleon Bonaparte embarked on his expedition to Egypt in 1798. Equipped with ClaudeEtienne Savary’s latest French translation of the Qurʾān, he used the time aboard to familiarize himself with the religion of those he was about to conquer.“ Now we have a picture to better imagine this scene. :) If you haven’t already, you can read my essay here: https://lnkd.in/gtX4f3sb (DM me if you don’t have access)

Intrigue and betrayal define the life of Bohdan Stashynsky, a former KGB assassin who risked everything to escape his past. His newly published memoirs reveal the dark secrets of his espionage career, his assassination of two Ukrainian nationalists, and what led him to break free from the Soviet regime. Many say that Hannah Arendt got Immanuel Kant wrong. She did once describe his Doctrine of Right as "rather boring and pedantic," but we shouldn't be too quick to dismiss her interesting and creative reading of Kant's political philosophy, writes Nicholas Dunn on our blog: https://lnkd.in/eZJkVe93 Just a taste of what's on offer in our new database, Works of Philosophy and Their Reception: An expansive new resource exploring major works from antiquity to present, each presented in historical context across a series of collaborative volumes, edited by leading scholars.
