Abstract

In this article I attempt to analyze the first sequence, sᛇtᚨbᚨd, of the Pre- Old English runic inscription on the Loveden Hill Urn (ca. AD 450‒550). The runic inscription consists of three sequences, of which only the first can be deciphered and interpreted. This sequence shows the yew-rune, ᛇ. Apart from the Caistor-by-Norwich Astragalus, where the yew-rune is part of the diphthong, this is the only attestation of this rune in Pre-Old English. In the second part of my contribution I list the attested runes of the Pre-futorc in the phonologically relevant inscriptions in the early phase of Pre-Old English (ca. AD 425‒550) to show that the original rune-row has already been altered to a certain degree.
