Les mémoires urbaines des « marins rouges » (1917–1919) en Allemagne depuis la fin de la Seconde Guerre mondiale

From the book Stadt − Krieg − Literatur

Abstract

The “red sailor” is an important figure in the narrative of the labour movement, particularly in Germany. By breaking it down, this article shows how it was embodied in the memory of the two Germanys after 1945, both as an object of rivalry and in internal tensions. Through the study of this memory in five cities (Berlin, Cologne, Kiel, Rostock, and Wilhelmshaven), it follows its evolution from the Cold War debates to the contemporary process of patrimonialization and depoliticization, marked also by the erasure and deactivation of the critical potential of the figure.
