Abstract

„Germania Sacra“ (GS) is a longterm research project of the Union of the German Academies located at the Göttingen Academy of Sciences and Humanities in Lower Saxony. Since 1929, GS has been publishing a series of comprehensive reference books on the history of ecclesiastical institutions in the Holy Roman Empire from late antiquity to the early nineteenth century. In the course of work, a wealth of prosopographical data has been accumulated. In 2008, GS began processing this information and compiling a digital persons index. This lecture shows the quantitative and qualitative benefits offered by digital data as opposed to analogue print data formats. It will also demonstrate how the uses of the digital index of persons can be exponentially multiplied by connecting it to external databases such as the „Repertorium Germanicum“ (RG) or the „Repertorium Academicum Germanicum“ (RAG).
