Huge Channel 4 comedy series shelved by bosses as leading star takes break from TV to focus on family

A huge Channel 4 comedy series has been shelved by bosses.

Late Night Lycett won't be returning to our screens anytime soon as the lead star Joe, 36, will be taking a break from TV to focus on his family.

The comedian shocked fans when he announced that he had become a father for the first time in October last year with a sweet snap of him holding his newborn son.

Joe is keen to spend as much time as he can with his baby boy and has put filming for his show on hold.

According to The Sun, an insider said: 'Late Night Lycett is a hugely popular format and one that Channel 4 want to keep on air.

'Joe's witty one-liners as well as the show's comedy and feel-good vibe means it's not shy of attracting big names out on a Friday evening like Alesha Dixon and Elizabeth Hurley.

'Channel 4 are keen for another series but at the moment Joe has taken extended time off to be with his newborn son and family.

'It means meetings around the future of Late Night Lycett have not been able to take place.

'Bosses are respecting his decision and when he does return to work, talks will take place about whether to commission a new series.'

The first series of Late Night Lycett hit our screens in 2023, followed by a second last year.

There have been seven episodes over two successful series.

The programme is filmed on Joe's home turf of Birmingham.

The show's synopsis reads: 'Joe Lycett presents his late-night comedy entertainment series, live from his hometown of Birmingham, with madcap games, hilarious sketches, Joe's aunties, and celebrity guests.'

It has become a huge fan favourite over the past two years and received a BAFTA for best Entertainment Performance.

Back in November Joe revealed that he spent the first few weeks of fatherhood 'doing a lot of crying'.

Speaking on the Parenting Hell podcast, he said: 'I've done a lot of, I mean less so now, but the first sort of two weeks I did a lot of crying because I did a lot of nostalgia for the future and imagined what he would be like when he was 20 and then worried about him when he's an old man and I can't be there for him.'

The funnyman likes to keep his private life out of the spotlight as much as possible, but he has opened up a little bit about his partner in the past.

In April last year the star revealed he was in a relationship.

Speaking on his show, he told viewers: 'A lot has changed since the last series, I've got some news which is that I have a girlfriend.

'I've talked about being bisexual for years but people presume I'm homosexual based on my entire personality... yes I've got a girlfriend and people have been very nice about it.'

Speaking on The Pieces podcast, Joe said: 'So I’ve got Winston the cat, and my partner Denise.

'And, um, she’s not called Denise, but I don’t talk about her, because she has a job that she can’t be in the public eye.

'I call her Denise because she hates the name Denise, so, uh, I live with Denise.'
