Miss Austen viewers have praised the brand new period drama as 'perfect Sunday night viewing' after just one episode.

The first instalment of the BBC series aired on February 2 and stars Keeley Hawes as Cassandra, as well as Game of Throne star Rose Leslie as Isabella Fowle.

Exploring the sisterly bond between Cassandra and Jane Austen, the four-part drama was filmed in and around the home counties.

Adapted from Gill Hornby’s best-selling novel, BAFTA-winning writer Andrea Gibb has taken the tale of Cassandra notoriously burning Jane’s letters and explores the sisters' challenging relationship.

The show has already received glowing feedback from viewers and many have taken to social media to share their verdicts.

One posted on X: 'Keeley Hawes her usual inspirational self. Rose Leslie perfect in her role but the most awesome casting is Patsy Ferran as the iconic Jane.

Miss Austen has aired in the same year as the 250th anniversary of Jane Austen's birth.

Other cast members include Downton Abbey star Phyllis Logan, Max Irons, Alfred Enoch, Jessica Hynes, The Crown actor Kevin McNally, Mirren Mack and others.

The new period drama is directed by Aisling Walsh and produced by Stella Merz, and is a co-production of Bonnie Productions and MASTERPIECE, in association with the BBC and Federation Stories.

It comes after the BBC's historical drama Wolf Hall: The Mirror And The Light came to an end last year.

The decadent costume drama based on Dame Hilary Mantel's novel of the same name and starring Sir Mark Rylance and Damian Lewis follows Thomas Cromwell in the aftermath of the execution of Queen Anne Boleyn.

While the death of the Queen has left the King free to marry again, the politics at court are deadlier than ever before.

The drama starts in 1830, years after Jane passed away, and puts Cassandra centre-stage

An isolated and increasingly desperate Cromwell, played again by Sir Mark, will stop at nothing to cling on to power, while an increasingly paranoid King Henry, again played by Homeland star Damian, proves more and more difficult to please.

And the final episode saw Cromwell's downfall play out, with the once-mighty courtier stripped of his titles and brought to the Tower Of London on treason charges.

Following the crushing end to the show, viewers took to social media to share their sadness that it had wrapped, and praised Sir Mark's performance.
