What is the Weekly Flutter lottery?

The Weekly Flutter is a lottery product created and owned by the BHF in order to help raise funds for our life saving research. It’s licensed by the Gambling Commission and run in line with all legal requirements, and in a responsible manner with protections in place to help vulnerable people. Where does the money come from and why are you giving money away?

The Weekly Flutter is a fundraising activity, We invest in weekly prizes as part of running our lottery and these costs are carefully considered to ensure that we are always raising more than we give away. In 2022 our lottery and raffle proceeds were £4,182,468.00 which we raised thanks to our amazing supporters.

Is this lottery legal?

Yes, we operate in compliance with Gambling Commission (the UK regulatory body concerned with lotteries) requirements, and the lottery is administered by a certified External Lottery Manager. For further information, please see our rules page.

Why are you promoting this form of fundraising? Isn't this gambling?

At BHF we are committed to ensuring that our Weekly Lottery offers new and existing supporters a chance to be involved in a different way of fundraising our research. We encourage supporters to only sign up for what they can afford and ensure that our lottery is fair and open. Only people over 18 years old can sign up.

The Weekly Flutter is licensed by The Gambling Commission who were set up under the Gambling Act 2005 (opens in new tab). It is their responsibility to regulate the individuals and businesses that provide gambling in Great Britain, including the National Lottery.

Why are you marketing the lottery?

We currently run adverts online, on the TV and have fundraisers on the street promoting our lottery. We do this as we know that there are many people who would be interested in supporting BHF in this way but may not be aware that we run a lottery. We are looking to reach out to those people. We encourage all new and existing supporters to gamble responsibly.

What is responsible gambling?

Responsible gambling is about keeping your gambling under control and ensuring money that you spend on gambling is within your limits. We limit sign ups to the Weekly Flutter to two entries per week to ensure that we are not encouraging supporters to sign up to more entries than they can afford. The majority of people do gamble responsibly and gambling in moderation is okay, but it may help you to keep your gambling under control by:

  • Remembering that you are taking part for fun and not as a means of investing your money
  • Setting strict limits on how much time and money you're going to spend, before playing
  • Quitting while you're ahead
  • Only gambling with money that you can afford to lose
  • Not spending more money on gambling in the hope that you will win back any money that you've already lost
  • Keeping up other interests and hobbies and not letting gambling take over your life
  • Not gambling in order to escape from stress or boredom.

If you are worried about your gambling or that of someone close to you, BeGambleAware is the UK's leading authority on the provision of support, advice and counselling to people affected by gambling problems. If you or someone you know needs help or advice call the National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133 (lines open 24 hours a day) or visit www.begambleaware.org

We appreciate that this type of fundraising isn’t for everyone, but we hope that the Weekly Flutter offers a different route for people who want to gamble responsibly as well as supporting our research.

Each ticket costs £1.

Are there any special offers if I buy more tickets?

No, there are currently no special offers if you buy more tickets.

No, we cannot take payments over the phone for raffle tickets, but you can play online at www.bhf.org.uk/how-you-can-help/donate/bhf-raffle

The raffle site has taken over-payment from my card.

We're sorry to hear that the wrong amount has been taken from your card, please get in touch with our customer care team so we can help by emailing [email protected] or calling 0300 330 3322.

Does it matter that I can't choose which first prize I want online?

No, if you win you will be contacted by a member of the raffle team, who will check with you which prize you would like.

Please can you send me a list of the latest winners?

Top 5 winners can be found on our website here, but the full winners list is available by calling our CSC team on 0300 330 3322.

Why is my money spent on raffle prizes and not helping fund research?

Our raffles raise much more money than we spend on prizes. We carefully consider the prize amount to ensure that it is an attractive offer to people, while ensuring that we raise enough money from the raffles for this amount to be reasonable. This is reviewed regularly.

I bought raffle tickets online, but the tickets numbers are different to the ones I received in the post. Can I have the ticket numbers I already have?

Unique ticket numbers are assigned by entry through post or online so it's unfortunately not possible to offer the same ticket numbers.

If you have any questions that aren’t covered above, call our Supporter Care Team on 0300 330 3322. Lines are open Monday-Friday 9.00-17.00. Or you can email us on [email protected].
