Kirsten Faulkner showed zero emotion as she crossed the line in front of me. Did she realise how much of a gap she had?

By my calculations, she's the United States' first winner of the Olympic women's road race in 40 years.

It's an 18-second lead. Vos, Vas and Kopecky have messed it up. The gold medal is riding away from them.

  8. Faulkner goes clearpublished at 17:06

    Cycling - women's road race - 2.5km to go

American Kristen Faulkner goes and the other three just stop and stare, daring each other to chase.

She has a gap, she might take this until the line.

    Cycling - women's road race - 3.5km to go

American Kristen Faulkner is making Belgium's Lotte Kopecky do all the work to bridge the gap. Kopecky has the meanest sprint of the four remaining favourites. No rider can afford to take her to the end.

The groups come together and then Marianne Vos immediately attacks.

It's all strung out. But all three riders are able to follow.
