Pervez is Professor of International Business and Chair at the University of Birmingham, and his research focuses on multinational enterprise (MNE) strategies on emerging market firms and society. Pervez believes the social sciences are crucial for understanding and solving the challenges we face in our daily lives. “Natural sciences (STEM) can find solutions for different problems but without understanding the impact of these solutions on society, these cannot be properly implemented. NTU Emeritus Professor Matt Henn has been elected to the prestigious Fellowship of the Academy of Social Science for his research into young people’s complex relationship with democracy. Professor Henn has worked in the higher education sector for more than 36 years. With only one day to go until our free in-person event with University of Exeter, the countdown is on. If the UK wants to retain resilient food and farming systems, which can deal with the demands of a changing climate and technological innovation, we need farming communities and rural communities which are healthy and sustainable. A steep rise in mental health problems within rural parts of the country, exacerbated by reduced access to support services, could be the biggest barrier. Our panel will unpack these challenges and identify the policy solutions which need to be put in place. This event will see contributions from farmer and former NFU President Baroness Minette Batters (event chair), Professor Matt Lobley and Dr Becca Wheeler of the University of Exeter, and farmer, consultant and The Farming Community Network (FCN) volunteer Christine Malseed. I was blown away when I learnt that I had been nominated and then elected as a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences. It is the sort of thing one never imagines happening. I am looking forward to continuing to promote and demonstrate the value of Social Science through my research. I also wish to thank and to recognise my deep appreciation to all my collaborators (and family and pets) who have played an important part in my career journey to this point.
