Sweden Services PMI
In Sweden, the Swedbank’s Services PMI measures the performance of the service sector and is derived from a survey of 200 companies. The index tracks variables such as New Orders (35 percent of total weight), Business Volume (25 percent), Employment (20 percent) and Suppliers’ Delivery Times (20 percent). A reading above 50 indicates that the services sector is generally expanding; below 50 indicates that it is generally declining.

Sweden Services Sector Contracts in September
The Services PMI dropped to 49.1 in September 2024, from a downwardly revised 52.4 in the previous month. This marked the first contraction since May, primarily attributed to order intake (49.9 vs 53.6 in August), business volume (48 vs 51.1), delivery times (51.7 vs 55.9) and employment (46.4 vs 48.4). Meanwhile, the index for raw and input prices fell to 49.1 from 54.1 in the previous month, marking its lowest level since the pandemic year of 2020, and signaling a continued price pressure from the services sector.

Sweden Services Sector Growth Slows
The Services PMI fell to 52.9 in August 2024, down from 53.8 in the previous month, but remained in expansionary territory for the third consecutive period. The decline was mainly due to decreases in the business volume index (51.6 vs. 54 in July) and employment index (48.6 vs. 51.2), with employment slipping below the growth zone as companies held off on new hires. In contrast, the indices for new orders (54 vs. 53.9) and delivery times (56.7 vs. 55.9) showed improvement. The index for raw and input prices fell to 55.9 from 56.7 in July, indicating that price pressures in the service sector are easing to levels not seen since the pandemic in 2020.
