Brazil Unemployment Drops Further, as Expected
Brazil’s unemployment rate averaged 6.9% in the three months leading to June of 2024, in line with market estimates, and dropping from the 7.1% rate in the three months to May. The reading was the lowest since January 2015, adding leeway for the central bank to ease the pace of its rate-cutting campaign as inflation shows signs of stickiness. The number of unemployed individuals fell to 7.5 million people from 7.8 million in the previous period, while employed individuals rose by 499 thousand people to a record high of 101.8 million. In the meantime, average real wages rose by 1.8% from the previous moving quarter to BRL 3,214 per month.

The result was lower than market estimates of 7.7%, adding leeway for the central bank to ease the pace of its rate-cutting campaign as inflation shows signs of stickiness. The number of unemployed individuals was relatively unchanged from the previous moving quarter at 8.2 million people, while employed individuals rose by 601 thousand people to a record high of 100.8 million. In the meantime, average real wages rose by 0.9% from the previous moving quarter to BRL 3,151 per month.
