Pōpao/en
Appearance
The pōpao is the Tongan word for outrigger canoe, a hollowed out tree trunk carrying one or a few fishermen onto the quiet lagoon (not on the large).
Main parts:
- katea, the larger hull
- kiato, the cross beams connecting the both hulls
- hama (or ama), the smaller hull or outrigger
- tauama, the sticks and ropes connecting the outrigger to the crossbeams. The U shape is characteristic for Tonga.
When the 2 hulls are more or less equal in size (as for the kalia), they are called fakatoukatea. FOKI
