Sony Wonder

The wonder beyond the rising sun.

Sony Wonder was a children's sub-division of Sony Music Entertainment that was involved with the distribution of home media. In the Mid-1990's, the company attempted to get into the TV market and in May 1998, had obtained the rights to the Generation 1 cartoon by acquiring Sunbow Entertainment. The company however sold off all their TV assets including Sunbow to TV-Loonland AG in October 2000 after only a shy year and a half of ownership. Sony Music retained US distribution (which already was being done by Rhino Entertainment) and the international music rights to Sony Wonder's TV catalog.

From 2000 until 2003, many Generation 1 DVDs and videos in the UK were released under their name, under a distribution deal with Maverick Entertainment.

In the mid '00s, Sony Wonder secured the North American home video rights to the Generation 1 cartoon from Rhino Entertainment, and in late 2006 released the 20th Anniversary Special Edition DVD of The Transformers: The Movie. The company was planning to re-release the Generation 1 cartoon, but in 2007, the Sony Wonder division was transferred by Sony-BMG Music Entertainment over to Sony Pictures and a majority of licenses were held over. The Transformers license wasn't included in this move, ending up with Sony Wonder not releasing a single DVD of the Generation 1 cartoon in the US.

Other

Between 2007 and 2009, Sony's mainline entertainment division, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, released DVDs of Beast Machines in France, Australia, New Zealand, Germany and the UK; a 2008 brochure from Sony Pictures Television International says they also hold the international TV rights to Beast Machines, which might explain that- of course, why they don't have Beast Wars is a conundrum.

Sony Computer Entertainment produces the PlayStation series of video game consoles, which has seen a number of Transformers video games over the years. Their former game studio, SCE Studio Cambridge, even developed Beast Wars: Transformers for the original PlayStation. In 2015, Sony cooperated with TakaraTomy to produce Optimus Prime featuring Original PlayStation, a toy that transforms into a scaled down PlayStation console.
