Vera Kingeekuk Metcalf ni mwalimu na mtetezi anayejulikana kwa kazi yake ya kuhifadhi mila na lugha ya Wenyeji wa Alaska. mnamo 2019 alichaguliwa kwa Ukumbi wa Umaarufu wa Wanawake wa Alaska.

Metcalf alizaliwa Sivungap(savoonga) katika kisiwa cha St. Lawrence, Alaska. [1]Wakati wa masomo yake kisiwani aliwahi kuwa msaidizi wa mwalimu, na alitafsiri masomo katika lugha ya Yupik ili kushiriki na wanafunzi darasani.[2]Mnamo 1991, Metcalf alipata shahada yake ya kutoka Chuo Kikuu cha Alaska Fairbanks.

Wakati akifanya kazi kwa Bering Straits Foundation, Metcalf alifanya kazi ya kurejesha mabaki yaliyoshikiliwa na Jumba la kumbukumbu la Fairbanks na Taasisi ya Smithsonian.[3]Kupitia kazi yake takriban mabaki 1000 yalirudishwa katika Kisiwa cha St. Lawrence chini ya Sheria ya Ulinzi na Urejeshaji wa Makaburi ya Wenyeji wa Marekani.[4][5]

ed as the head of the Eskimo Walrus Commission,[1] and in that role she works to maintain rights of subsistence hunting of walrus[5][6] and carving of walrus ivory by members of the Alaskan Native community.[


While working for the Bering Straits Foundation, Metcalf worked on the repatriation of remains held by the Fairbanks Museum and Smithsonian Institution.[2] Through her work almost 1000 remains were returned to St. Lawrence Island under the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act.[3][4]
