Hey Julian, I'm not familiar enough from gridspec to help, but your emails were received by the list. If no one on the list has (time to write) a response, I would recommend making your example a little more reproducible (e.g., what are a and b?) and posting it on stackoverflow. It seems the 'bottom' parameter is the best for me.
