Junko Tabei (田部井 淳子, Tabei Junko, 22 September 1939 – 20 October 2016) was a Japanese mountaineer. She was the first woman to reach the summit of Mount Everest. She completed her climb of Mount Everest in 1975. [1] She was also the first woman to climb all Seven Summits by climbing the highest peak on every continent. She was born in Miharu, Fukushima.

Tabei died of peritoneal cancer on 20 October 2016 in Kawagoe, Saitama. She was 77.[2]
