Academic Area
The School of Data Science (SDS) offers a plenty of undergraduate and post-graduate programmes, that cover computer science and engineering, statistics, operations research, and interdisciplinary studies. With a focus on artificial intelligence, machine learning and big data applications, the school is an intellectual hub for students to broaden their horizons in the information age. It is a cradle for future data scientists, engineers, and professionals. It is a place where the students make global connections.
SDS features three disciplines: computer science and engineering, statistics, data science and big data technology. We build on the academic reputation and holistic education tradition of the Chinese University of Hong Kong. We promote the integration of learning and research to prepare the students for their future development.
SDS is home to many internationally acclaimed faculty, who were inspiring educators in world-leading universities, and industry veterans. The faculty members bring to the school multi-year teaching and industry experiences from around the world.
SDS has a faculty size of 62 as of March 2022, among them are 4 X. Q. Deng Presidential Chair Professors, 10 Presidential Chair Professors, 12 Professors, 11 Associate Professors, 23 Assistant Professors, and 1 Lecturer. Many of the faculty members are fellows of leading international academic organizations, including 1 Fellow of the Royal Canadian Academy of Sciences and Foreign Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, 1 Fellow of the Royal Canadian Academy of Sciences and the Canadian Academy of Engineering, 1 Fellow of the Singapore Academy of Engineering, 1 INFORMS Fellow, 4 IEEE Fellows, 1 IASCYS Fellow, 2 IMS Fellows, 2 SIAM Fellows, 1 ISCA Fellow, 9 national high-level talents, and 7 provincial and municipal high-level talents.
Computer Science and Engineering
Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) is the knowledge foundation of the information age, and one of the largest scientific disciplines in modern society. It covers a wide range of studies from theory to practice. China’s economy has experienced remarkable growth in the past decade when information and communication technology has been a main driving force. In the information age, software engineers are among the most demanded professions. Meeting the needs of the industry in the Greater Bay Area, we have developed world-class degree programs, that provide the foundation of computer theory, computer network, software engineering, information and network security, artificial intelligence, machine learning, pattern recognition, natural language processing, speech and vision.
CSE is an intellectual hub for students to discover, to grow and to innovate. It provides a solid foundation in mathematics and other foundation subjects, and practical skills such as modeling and programming. Machine learning, artificial intelligence and data science are the key application areas. Our graduates stand out from the peers whether they are champions in the job market or gifted post-graduate students in world-class universities.
Data Science and Big Data Technology
Data Science and Big Data Technology fosters student success both in theory and practice. With the rapid development of the Internet, big data is getting bigger and at a faster speed. This calls for technology solutions to effective data analytics to turn raw data into knowledge, and supplies of data scientists to the fill the talent gap.
Data Science and Big Data Technology is an interdisciplinary program that covers all areas of data analytics from data collection and analysis to decision-making. Specifically, the teaching and research programmes include operations research, statistics, machine learning, operations management, decision science, and related interdisciplinary studies. Our graduates are either rising stars in leading graduate schools in the world, or highly trained professionals, entrepreneurs, and adventurers in public and private sectors.
Statistics
Statistics is a subject that studies data collection, analytics, and interpretation to obtain information for decision-making. The study of statistics finds its applications in biology, social sciences, natural sciences, accounting, finance, medicine, engineering, and public policy making, and play an increasingly important role in today's economy. With the advances of sensing, communication and computing technologies, data is becoming more accessible than ever, that calls for advanced modeling and analytical skills. Our students are highly trained in theory and practice of all aspects of statistics, and well equipped to deal with real-world problems.
The Statistics program provides our students the best opportunity to expose themselves to scientific problems in various fields of business, engineering, natural sciences and social sciences, and prepares our students with the required critical thinking and problem solving skills whether they continue to pursue graduate studies or join the job market.
