Our Mission

The Stanford Center on China's Economy and Institutions is Stanford’s home for empirical, multidisciplinary research on China’s economy. We aim to foster path-breaking research, create transformative student experiences, and advance public understanding of China’s economy and its impact on the world.

Our Leadership

The Stanford Center on China’s Economy and Institutions (SCCEI) is led by faculty co-directors Hongbin Li and Scott Rozelle. Together, the Center’s directors have over 40 years of experience conducting empirical research on key aspects of China’s economy. They launched SCCEI to lower barriers and serve as a hub to better integrate, catalyze, and disseminate data-driven research on China.

Before SCCEI, Hongbin Li directed the China Program at the Stanford King Center on Global Development, part of the Stanford Institute for Economic and Policy Research (SIEPR). Scott Rozelle directed the Rural Education Action Program (REAP) at the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies (FSI). REAP remains a program under SCCEI and continues to be dedicated to understanding the health and education challenges facing rural China.

In 2021, the two teams joined to form the Stanford Center on China’s Economy and Institutions under the co-leadership of Hongbin Li and Scott Rozelle. SCCEI now leverages the expertise of our co-directors and affiliated faculty to conduct and support empirical, multi-disciplinary research that advances public understanding on a broad array of important issues of China's economy and its impact on the world.
