Today, a dumb act came rather close to perhaps burning down my own house and my neighbors. Without thinking, I had dumped some fireplace ashes from the metal can I keep them in, into in my compost bin. The ashes in the bottom were not quite as cool, and the pile went up in small flames. I only found out because a neighbor knocked on my door and asked if I was burning something. Looking over, I was horrified to see the flames coming from the compost bin, and that small flames had spread to my neighbors yard of dried grass. Rushing to get my garden hose hooked up, I did get all the flames doused. If it were not for Leo, this could have been really, really bad. This is a bit of a plastic lattice and old garden hose that was next to the compost bin. My compost is now quite a bit toasted now. Arizona burns rather easily, way too easily. Today was one my luckiest days, and I am dumbfounded to even figure out how or why I got so lucky.
