On the right, trip leader Mark Jirsa of the Minnesota Geological Survey has probably spent more time on top of the locality's Sudbury Impact Layer than anybody. That's his poster of stratigraphy and stops (View Large). A bus full of ILSG conference participants visited the Sudbury Impact Layer in the Gunflint Iron Range. Earth's second largest -known asteroid impact crater is located 480 miles (770 km) further to the east at Sudbury, Ontario. The timing for the following sequence of arrival events is calculated by distance from impact epicenter: 1) Plasma energy from asteroid-planet encounter, 13 seconds after impact (which would have yielded 3rd degree burns even at this incredible distance) 2) * Surface Earthquake * with ~10 m of vertical whipsnapping movement, 2-3 minutes after impact 3) ** Ejecta Ground Surge ** of fine material to 1-3 m thick, 5-10 minutes after impact 4) Air Blast (Sonic Boom), 40 minutes after impact 5) *** Tsunami ***, 1-3 hours after impact Only the * earthquake *, ** ejecta surge **, and *** tsunami *** left physical evidence along a 1/2 mile length of thin Sudbury Impact Layer on and near the Magnetic Rock trail loop.
