And despite the extra lanes, it’s still gridlocked. Maybe they need just one more lane…

Striking workers are to blame for waiting lists (they were long way before striking!).
Eliminating 2 year waits (my son is on a 4 year waiting list).
Record funding (yeah, thanks for the inflation 👍).

Ask UK@feddit.uk•How difficult is it to get around the UK without a car in 2023?English
2·3 years agoI don’t drive but I don’t rely on public transport any more - I mostly cycle or walk to where I need to get to.
I live in a suburb of a large-ish town but I have most basic amenities within a 10 minute walk - a large supermarket, schools, parks, pharmacy, smaller grocery shops (corner shops), cafe, hairdressers etc.
That’s fairly common in the UK unless you live in a small town or village. The bus services only go into the town centre and the service is spotty, so usually it’s slower if you need to get to another suburb at a particular time.
My partner does drive however and as someone else said, it’d be hard to get out and about with kids without a car.

Programmer Humor@lemmy.ml•and people wonder why we say PHP is a meme
1·3 years agoI just tested these out out of curiosity.
0==“text” returns false in PHP 8.2 as I’d expect. The others make sense in the way that php juggles between types. An empty variable can type-juggle to null, but an array can’t be directly compared with a string.
(Although you wouldn’t really want to compare an array with a string, PHP just treats an array as greater than other variables. So weirdly, ([] > “”) == true.)

141·3 years agoIf you’re trying to directly compare different variable types in any language without strong typing, you’re going to have edge-case results which you might not expect.
My “coding like a moron” message still stands. PHP isn’t a strongly typed language and it doesn’t tell you off for trying stupid stuff like comparing a string with an int. Nor do other languages like JavaScript.

UK Politics@feddit.uk•Tories 'could be reduced to less than 100 seats for first time in 345 years'
1·3 years agoThe Labour members were in favour of electoral reform but the Labour leadership won’t back it unfortunately, especially not whilst they’re staring down the barrel of a majority government.
Blair almost backed electoral reform until he got a stonking majority.

1·3 years agoA government with a big majority is essentially a 5-year dictatorship. It’s the worst of both worlds - not only do they have barely any short-term accountability but no long-term planning is required either.

Lemmy Shitpost@lemmy.world•Bye Reddit. So long and thanks for all the fish.
1·3 years agoIt seems that there’s an issue where Reddit rate-limits the comment editing, so many comments don’t get edited. There are other versions of the script which add a 5 second delay to avoid getting limited.

Reddit@lemmy.world•Reddit user alleges California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) non-compliance/violtion; and finds it difficult to delete posts and content on RedditEnglish
8·3 years agoI made a GDPR request through reddithelp.com last night; maybe I shouldn’t have bothered! Assuming I don’t hear back, I’ll resend the request via email then report them to the Information Commissioner (UK gov dept) if I’ve had no proper response.
By the way, I’m not sure if the California law is the same, but with a GDPR “right to be forgotten” request, the organisation must delete your data from their backups (or at least make sure your data will not be restored from a backup). Asking you to delete your own comments clearly won’t meet that requirement.

The widespread use of Discord baffles me. It seems to be basically IRC with voice chat and no choice in servers. It’s good for group voice chat with people you already know, but I can’t see how it fits any other use case like being a replacement for a subreddit community.

He’s carting these huge fucking antlers around on a national tour just for the lamest of lame puns. He must have workshopped this “gag” and miraculously not died on his arse, for him to decide it’s worth hauling the antlers around. Baffling.
