World News@lemmy.world•Opposition to US has hardened in western Europe after Greenland threat, poll findsEnglish
2·1 hour agoI just don’t see decoupling happening (in my lifetime).
This is a bit of a “all or nothing” fallacy. It admits to degrees. It’s like someone saying that they can’t be vegetarian because they like bacon. Dude, just cut out everything except bacon, it’s fine.
Countries reducing their exposure to USD is still a good step, given how unreliable a partner the USA has been the last decade. You don’t have to fully dump all your USD bonds to add resilience to your financial system.

Fuck The USA@lemmy.ca•Canadians are staying away from the US — and the drop in travel is getting hard to ignoreEnglish
31·1 hour agoToo extreme. I’d say there are still plenty of legitimate reasons.
And y’know, bring a pack of matches.

Fuck The USA@lemmy.ca•Canadians are staying away from the US — and the drop in travel is getting hard to ignoreEnglish
5·1 hour agoFrom what I understand, many US towns have been taxing tourists much more heavily than locals. As such, their city budgets are disproportionately reliant on tourism. So a relatively small drop in Canadian tourists leaves a gaping hole in budgets.
If possible, communicate with the councils of the towns you might have visited and let them know why you aren’t visiting.

World News@lemmy.world•Opposition to US has hardened in western Europe after Greenland threat, poll findsEnglish
8·5 hours agoUS power stems directly from its dollar position. Its status as reserve currency is a force multiplier. The immediate step is to reduce exposure to it, which disproportionately reduces US power in the short term.
The longer this goes on, the more systems decouple from the USA and correspondingly the less power and influence they have.

Mountain Town is located “about halfway between Port Mary and the interior mountains”, so it also may connect there, even if it’s blocked off with the cave-in. So it makes sense for MT to connect via Blackrock to Port Mary. It’s hard to see how that’ll work - maybe MT to Pleasant Valley or Keeper’s Pass. Then that would plausibly connect it to BR and PM.
Edit: Keeper’s Pass South has a collapsed tunnel that definitely leads to MT, so that answers that. So the Port Mary connection probably happens via Pleasant Valley, past Thompson’s Crossing through the blocked-off curve there.
Oh, and we know Mountain Town is supposed to connect to Blackrock somehow. It seems like they’d need a pretty substantial transition region between those two to justify it.

It’s definitely something that needs to be attacked at a systems level, not a personal one. Divesting your own investments is a small step. Writing your MP is another step. Telling your union’s retirement fund that you’d like them to divest is another step.
Many raindrops make an ocean, I suppose. But there are some people who control rivers that we can influence in a small way.
