Yes, I acknowledge all of that. Which is why I was correcting you when you said every one of us is descended from immigrants looking for a better life. It’s wrong to act like they are completely gone, not because it makes our ancestors look bad, but because it erases the people and cultures who are still here with us and persevere.

I mean, native Americans/native indians still exist. So not everyone
Find someone with a 3d printer. Your local library might have one even. I’m printing 55 whistles every 6 hours for around 7 cents a whistle.

Ask Science@lemmy.world•Would the tidal forces of the Jovian System affecting Europa mean there might be huge air pockets between a liquid ocean and icy shell?English
3·14 days agoSo as far as I know, and I am no expert to be clear, the whole reason Europa even has a liquid ocean under the ice is because of tidal heating. Where the moon itself is pushed and pulled, heating it up immensely because of the friction of that action. So there would be no “air pockets” as such, because the ice itself is the thing creating the ocean. And due to ice being less dense than water the ocean would actually be exerting pressure on the ice mantle, not the other way around. I think this is one of the driving forces of the cryovolcanism found on Europa.

4·17 days agoNot certain about the mars trilogy but there is a collapsing space elevator in the foundation series (at least on the show, haven’t read the books yet.)

4·17 days agoI think that depends on how big the tether is tbh. It has to be usable as an elevator so it can’t just be a thin cable. And your scenario is assuming that it would be cut down near the base, if it’s damaged anywhere higher up anything below the cut will fall down to earth.

4·17 days agoAh thanks, I was a dingus and looked up the diameter instead of the circumference. Still doesn’t really matter where you build it. No matter what it’s fucking up a a good portion of the equator if it falls.

4·18 days agoBy the necessities of its design a space elevator has to reach geostationary orbit, which would make it tall enough to wrap around the planet twice if it fell. Wouldn’t really matter if you built it on a west coast or not.
