  • The time to be concerned about the direction of the political system was November of 2024.

It’s quite literally too late to do anything about it now. If Trump wants to cancel elections, there will be much hand-wringing and finger-waggling while congress debates about the legality of such a thing in a committee to no avail and the courts slow-walk any kind of injunction that would preemptively prevent them from doing it before it actually mattered.

Why should any of us be surprised that the guy who tried to subvert democracy once before is brazenly and openly stating his desire to do so again? This result was so utterly predictable that I feel secondhand embarrassment for anybody just now getting anxious about the political system.

  • I’ve come to understand why the left is so bad at fighting the alt-right. There are no such things as conservative “principles”, but the left mainly fights by trying to point out hypocrisy as if these people had even an ounce of shame in their hearts.

The only way to win is not to abandon our principles in retaliation, but to fundamentally change the way we approach messaging. Forget about trying to convince any Republicans to not vote against their own interests with clever quips and screenshot of their old tweets - that shit won’t make a dent. What we need is somebody who talks about billionaires the same way Trump talks about immigrants. Someone bold enough to cross over into far left ideology, who will dominate the airwaves by generating outrage on the right faster than Trump could even dream.

Won’t happen though, not as long as the two party system is in the hands of the oligarchs.

  • I actually kind of like a slight amount of friction to signing up. Making a lemmy account takes almost no technical effort. Being able to understand what an instance is and which one is suitable for an individual user can be easily demystified with a cursory Google search, or even asking a shitty AI chatbot.

The only excuse is that it’s harder to do that than it is to make an account on reddit or tiktok or whatever.

A big part of what made web 1.0 special, imo, is that everyone had a baseline technical competency in order to access the web and understand what they needed to do to visit certain websites. It wasn’t an extreme barrier, and someone who was determined could parse out the steps required with no formal instructions whatsoever. But the app economy ruined all of that and made everything ultra-accessible. Social media just preyed on that lazy mindset to keep users engaged with their algorithms forever.

  • Okay, I deleted my comment not just because I didn’t want people to upvote the misinformation, but also because I knew if I started typing out an edit or a reply that I would get upset and say more than I should. But since you’re now twisting the knife, I’ll oblige, since it’s entirely unavoidable at this point.

First, you are absolutely correct about the lyrics. I made a mistake. Happy?

Second, do not presume to know anything about me:

Not sure if you actually know too many queer people who were 90s kids

Well, I know me, for one. Now I know you too.

you seem to think is only ever a slur.

Did I say that? I self-censored not because I believe that the word should be unspeakable, but because I don’t want to be banned from Lemmy for typing it out. It’s explicitly against the rules of /c/politics.

To be clear, I don’t really care if people use it, as an insult or otherwise - that’s their business and not mine. But platforms most certainly do. To add on to that, my preferences are not shared by all. I know it makes some people uncomfortable to read it, which is why I try to avoid it when I can. We’ve all definitely matured past the people that we were in the 90’s. I’m not going to regress just for contextual purposes.
