Except the interest part of the mortgage payment is equivalent to rent, and the principle part is paying down the loan. Mortgage payments are often much higher than rent payments for an equivalent property. Whether it’s a better deal to buy or rent depends on a number of factors and isn’t as cut and dry as the op suggests.

DavidDoesLemmy@aussie.zonetoA Boring Dystopia@lemmy.world•The news is sugarcoating how revolting the Epstein files are
14·2 days agoAge of consent varies by country with many developed nations having it at 16. If these women were 16 or 17, the far greater crime is the trafficking and coercion.
It’s not wasted. You get somewhere to live for the month for the rent. It’s like saying all food I buy is wasted money because I’ll just be hungry again next month.
You’re assuming everyone acts rationally, which is a big assumption.

AusFinance@aussie.zone•‘We never would have bought’: Australian mortgage holders feel the pain as interest rates rise again
4·2 days agoThere are some naive people in this article. One that says they raised interest rates before and it didn’t fix inflation so why are they trying it again? 😭
I find that now I listen to a much broader selection of music. If anyone recommends a band I’ll listen to their album. In the past I couldn’t afford to buy the albums of every band someone else liked, so I stayed in my lane (musically) with what I listened to.

1·2 days agoI think it’s fine to come up with alternative theories if that supports reasonable doubt. If you can think of other ways the evidence could exist, there is doubt that it happened the way the prosecutor said.
Bringing in a knife from the outside does seem a bit dodgy though. Firstly just getting it into the court would be impossible today.
It’s legal and regulated. Seems to work fine. I don’t know anyone who wants to outlaw it.
I remember in the 90s when you had to buy CDs and DVDs (or VHS). It was awful. You couldn’t afford much so you had to be stingy in what you watched and listened to. At the time I remember dreaming of endless content options that I could try. Streaming is that dream. The fact that the shitty companies are making it worse and increasing prices doesn’t mean the streaming subscription model is inherently flawed.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Why did Bill Gates have to ask Epstein for secret antibiotics for his STDs?
12·6 days agoI guess if you follow that line of thinking, bill gates is a victim of a blackmail attempt. All spouses of those implicated are victims because they’re partner cheated on them.
I think when they talk of protecting victims they are referring to the girls and women who were trafficked and forced to have sex.

That’s also true. I don’t think this change will fix everything.

Farkin hell. That sounds awful. What country are you in? Developed nations have lots of safety nets.

Having a law the adults can point to helps them enforce boundaries. That’s what the social media ban was meant to be about
