2016 WMF Strategy consultation
Hello, all.
The Wikimedia Foundation (WMF) has launched a consultation to help create and prioritize WMF strategy beginning July 2016 and for the 12 to 24 months thereafter. This consultation will be open, on Meta, from 18 January to 26 February, after which the Foundation will also use these ideas to help inform its Annual Plan. (More on our timeline can be found on that Meta page.)
Your input is welcome (and greatly desired) at the Meta discussion, 2016 Strategy/Community consultation.
Apologies for English, where this is posted on a non-English project. We thought it was more important to get the consultation translated as much as possible, and good headway has been made there in some languages. There is still much to do, however! We created m:2016 Strategy/Translations to try to help coordinate what needs translation and what progress is being made. :)
If you have questions, please reach out to me on my talk page or on the strategy consultation's talk page or by email to mdennis@wikimedia.org.
I hope you'll join us! Maggie Dennis via MediaWiki message delivery (d) 18 genièr de 2016 a 19.06 (UTC)

Wikimania 2016: call for posters, discussions and trainings
Hi people,
the calls for posters, discussions and trainings for Wikimania 2016 are officially opened, you can find all the relevant links on the conference wiki:
https://wikimania2016.wikimedia.org/wiki/Submissions
The calls will be closed on March 20.
Posters will be reviewed just to make sure that there aren't things which are too much out of scope. Since we have a whole village we will surely find places to attach them, even if we they will be a lot!
Discussions will be managed by a guiding committee who will work on the wiki to meld all the proposals and suggestions.
Trainings will be reviewed by the programme committee. Please note that we request that each training has at least 3-5 interested attendees in order to be put in the programme.
By the beginning of April we will have a first list of all the accepted proposals.
If you have questions we suggest you to ask them on the discussion pages on wiki, so that everyone will be able to see them (and their answers, of course).
We are looking forward to read your ideas! --Yiyi (d) 29 febrièr de 2016 a 15.47 (UTC)
Little project for you
Hi all. Sorry I don't speak lenga d'òc; I have started to add people born in Occitània on Wikidata and would like your help to create a full list on your wiki. Please take a look at my home page. Diolch! As we say in my language (Welsh). Llywelyn2000 (d) 16 març de 2016 a 18.12 (UTC)
- Or maybe a detailed page of people born in Occitània exists? Llywelyn2000 (d) 17 març de 2016 a 06.32 (UTC)
- Hi. Yes this page exists, but it's not very detailled. Have a look here: Lista de personatges occitans.Jiròni (d) 17 març de 2016 a 08.32 (UTC)
- Utilizaire:Jiròni - Many thanks! I've now created a test page for you to see what is possible - in my userspace. This list comes directly from Wikidata. Please add "Year of birth" as column headers afte a colon e.g. "?yob:Year of birth". You can also translate the two templates, if you like: Modèl:Wikidata list and Modèl:Wikidata list end; there are only a few sentences. Please come back to me if I can help. Do you know how to add Occitan people on Wikidata, to produce a longer, better list? Llywelyn2000 (d) 17 març de 2016 a 11.08 (UTC)
- Good; now hit the 'Manually update' button to see the translated text. Llywelyn2000 (d) 17 març de 2016 a 12.12 (UTC)

Just made this video, just to help you. It shows: 1. copy name into Wikidata to find person. 2. Add Occitania as place of birth. And that's it! Oh yes: 3. refresh 'Manually update' above the table. You could then either add whole code or just the table onto your article (Lista de personatges occitans). All the best! Llywelyn2000 (d) 17 març de 2016 a 12.28 (UTC)
- Thank you so much for the video; i'll try to understand how it works!Jiròni (d) 17 març de 2016 a 12.33 (UTC)
- Oh, you're welcome! I've done a few more. If you want a video with voice (in English, unfortunately!) then it would only take me 5 minutes? Just added another 8 or 9. Because the data is added on Wikidata, it goes into other languages; so my Welsh Ocsitania page also increases! We could put it on Catalan, Basque, Spanish, French wikis too! Attack! Llywelyn2000 (d) 17 març de 2016 a 14.30 (UTC)
- One user (User:Ayack) on Wikidata has taken the word Occistania from some of the names on Wikidata. You can see which ones [2] eg Miquèl de Nòstra Dama and Pèire Godolin. I will leave a message on his talk page, but it would be better for you to discuss with him whether these people were born in Occitania or not. Thanks. Llywelyn2000 (d) 17 març de 2016 a 22.50 (UTC)
- I've added location (emplaçament actual) of Tolosa as being in Occitània! That's sorted it. But do keep an eye on the list - if it gets smaller, you'll know that someone is playing stupid up in Wikidata! All the best! Llywelyn2000 (d) 29 abril de 2016 a 08.22 (UTC)

Articles without content 2
Hi users of Occitan Wikipedia.
We had this discussion last year on these masses of articles without content that have been created by a bot. I know that some of you don't want to have them deleted in a row. I've set the deletion template in all of these articles with a script. So now you can find all these articles in Categoria:Pagina prepausada a la supression. I won't delete them as you wanted to improve them all. Unfortunately the template that has been used fot these article can't be corrected in a way that some content is displayed from Wikidata. Wikidata does not wpork like that. There have to be indentifiers for every information part set in all articles. I think it would be better if you write real information in these articles. I've seen that some of you have started to improve the articles. Good luck! I'll have a look again in let's say one or two years.
Best regards. --Holder (d) 31 març de 2016 a 19.16 (UTC)
- Two more suggestions:
- If you don't want readers to see the link on Categoria:Pagina prepausada a la supression in the articles you can hide it with __HIDDENCAT__.
- Perhaps it would also be helpful for readers if you write in the deletion template something like "if you want to improve this article click here" with a link to the editor.

Comienza Wiki Loves Folk!
Server switch 2016
The Wikimedia Foundation will be testing its newest data center in Dallas. This will make sure Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia wikis can stay online even after a disaster. To make sure everything is working, the Wikimedia Technology department needs to conduct a planned test. This test will show whether they can reliably switch from one data center to the other. It requires many teams to prepare for the test and to be available to fix any unexpected problems.
They will switch all traffic to the new data center on Tuesday, 19 April.
On Thursday, 21 April, they will switch back to the primary data center.
Unfortunately, because of some limitations in MediaWiki, all editing must stop during those two switches. We apologize for this disruption, and we are working to minimize it in the future.
You will be able to read, but not edit, all wikis for a short period of time.
- You will not be able to edit for approximately 15 to 30 minutes on Tuesday, 19 April and Thursday, 21 April, starting at 14:00 UTC (15:00 BST, 16:00 CEST, 10:00 EDT, 07:00 PDT).
If you try to edit or save during these times, you will see an error message. We hope that no edits will be lost during these minutes, but we can't guarantee it. If you see the error message, then please wait until everything is back to normal. Then you should be able to save your edit. But, we recommend that you make a copy of your changes first, just in case.
Other effects:
- Background jobs will be slower and some may be dropped.
Red links might not be updated as quickly as normal. If you create an article that is already linked somewhere else, the link will stay red longer than usual. Some long-running scripts will have to be stopped.
- There will be a code freeze for the week of 18 April.
No non-essential code deployments will take place.
This test was originally planned to take place on March 22. April 19th and 21st are the new dates. You can read the schedule at wikitech.wikimedia.org. They will post any changes on that schedule. There will be more notifications about this. Please share this information with your community. /User:Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 17 abril de 2016 a 21.07 (UTC)

Wikipedia to the Moon: voting has begun
Hello, after six weeks of community discussion about Wikipedia to the Moon, there are now 10 different proposals for content for the mission. Starting today, you can vote for them on Meta-Wiki, and decide what we will work on: a Wikipedia canon, different lists, the Moon in 300 languages, an astronomy editathon, featured articles, articles about technology, endangered things, or DNA-related topics. You can even vote against community involvement. Voting is open until 24 June. Sorry that this message is again in English only, but we are using village pumps to reach as many communities as possible, so that everyone knows they can vote.
Compact Links coming soon to this wiki
Hello, I wanted to give a heads up about an upcoming feature for this wiki which you may seen already in Tech News. Compact Language Links has been available as a beta-feature on all Wikimedia wikis since 2014. With compact language links enabled, users are shown a much shorter list of languages on the interlanguage link section of an article (see image). This will be enabled as a feature in the coming week for all users, which can be turned on or off using a preference setting. We look forward to your feedback and please do let us know if you have any questions. Details about Compact Language Links can be read in the project documentation.
Due to the large scale enablement of this feature, we have had to use MassMessage for this message and as a result it is only written in English. We will really appreciate if this message can be translated for other users of this wiki. The main announcement can also be translated on this page. Thank you. Wikipedia to the Moon: invitation to edit
Three weeks ago, you were invited to vote on how to take Wikipedia articles to the Moon. Community voting is over and the winning idea is to send all ‘’featured articles and lists’’ to the Moon. This decision means that, starting today, Wikipedians from all language communities are warmly invited to intensively work on their best articles and lists, and submit them to Wikipedia to the Moon. The central site to coordinate between communities will be Meta-Wiki. You will find an overview and more information there. Hopefully, we will be able to represent as many languages as possible, to show Wikipedia’s diversity. Please feel kindly invited to edit on behalf of your community and tell us about your work on featured content!

Compact Language Links enabled in this wiki today
Compact Language Links has been available as a beta-feature on all Wikimedia wikis since 2014. With compact language links enabled, users are shown a much shorter list of languages on the interlanguage link section of an article (see image). Based on several factors, this shorter list of languages is expected to be more relevant for them and valuable for finding similar content in a language known to them. More information about compact language links can be found in the documentation.
From today onwards, compact language links has been enabled as the default listing of interlanguage links on this wiki. However, using the button at the bottom, you will be able to see a longer list of all the languages the article has been written in. The setting for this compact list can be changed by using the checkbox under User Preferences -> Appearance -> Languages
The compact language links feature has been tested extensively by the Wikimedia Language team, which developed it. However, in case there are any problems or other feedback please let us know on the project talk page. It is to be noted that on some wikis the presence of an existing older gadget that was used for a similar purpose may cause an interference for compact language list. We would like to bring this to the attention of the admins of this wiki. Full details are on this phabricator ticket (in English).
Due to the large scale enablement of this feature, we have had to use MassMessage for this announcement and as a result it is only written in English. We will really appreciate if this message can be translated for other users of this wiki. Thank you. On behalf of the Wikimedia Language team: Runa Bhattacharjee (WMF) (talk)-8 julhet de 2016 a 03.03 (UTC)
Save/Publish
The Editing team is planning to change the name of the “Salvar” button to “Publicar la pagina” and “Publicar las modificacions”. “Publicar la pagina” will be used when you create a new page. “Publicar las modificacions” will be used when you change an existing page. The names will be consistent in all editing environments.[5][6]
This change will probably happen during the week of 30 August 2016. The change will be announced in Tech News when it happens.
If you are fluent in a language other than English, please check the status of translations at translatewiki.net for “Publicar la pagina” and “Publicar las modificacions”.
The main reason for this change is to avoid confusion for new editors. Repeated user research studies with new editors have shown that some new editors believed that “Salvar” would save a private copy of a new page in their accounts, rather than permanently publishing their changes on the web. It is important for this part of the user interface to be clear, since it is difficult to remove public information after it is published. We believe that the confusion caused by the “Salvar” button increases the workload for experienced editors, who have to clean up the information that people unintentionally disclose, and report it to the functionaries and stewards to suppress it. Clarifying what the button does will reduce this problem.
Beyond that, the goal is to make all the wikis and languages more consistent, and some wikis made this change many years ago. The Legal team at the Wikimedia Foundation supports this change. Making the edit interface easier to understand will make it easier to handle licensing and privacy questions that may arise.
Any help pages or other basic documentation about how to edit pages will also need to be updated, on-wiki and elsewhere. On wiki pages, you can use the wikitext codes {{int:Publishpage}}
and {{int:Publishchanges}}
to display the new labels in the user's preferred language. For the language settings in your account preferences, these wikitext codes produce “Publicar la pagina” and “Publicar las modificacions”.
Please share this news with community members who teach new editors and with others who may be interested.

Adieu a totes... tornarmai las infobóstias!
Adieu a totes, Espèri qu'anatz totes plan. Mercés, bon estiu e a lèu!
Merci. --Xenophôn (d) 10 octobre de 2016 a 10.00 (UTC)

Megaescafaments holderians....
Adieu, I sèm tornarmai... e en qualques jorns avèm perdut gaireben 2.000 "articles".
- Hi Capsot. My task as a global sysop is to delete vandalism. And I call 10'000 "articles" without any content a very huge vandalism. I think after five years it's clear that these none-articles will never be re-written. I don't delete these emty pages to reduce your articler count (which in fact is not real). And when Jfblanc starts his project on asteroids with a bot it will not take long until ocwiki has more than 100'000 articles - including deletion of all these emty pages! Best regards. --Holder (d) 11 octobre de 2016 a 15.07 (UTC)
- Well, I think you know too well, some of us tried to fill some of those articles which in my opinion differ greatly from vandalism but then I won't be discussing terminology well established in dictionaries. I know too well the article count is not real but then as I said before (we have discussed it at least twice and well you are well aware that the community here is not too favorable in general to a total erasure and going against the will of the community, especially if it's not your community isn't really fair play...) the impact of the reduction of these "stubs" means a huge blow for our community. J.F. Blanc's move, though I don't like short stubs like this, is in my opinion, to try to get some kind of public attention and attract more contributors that this poor wikipedia really needs desperately... but then you probably don't care much about this kind of consideration. I hadn't reacted so far, even when I was witnessing how you have been erasing these last days because it wasn't so brutal yet, but then in a few days we have lost 2.000 "articles" which is hurtful, and doesn't help the few contributors here to dedicate some (more/extra) time to the general improvement of this encyclopaedia. I wish I could do more, but then my life is, as I said many times, complicated, which is a very weak way of defining it, so please take this into consideration. There is nothing clear, you don't take into account the many articles that have been done so far, but obviously 12.000 articles to rewrite when you have just a few hands on it is an enormous task. So, I think that these articles cause no real trouble to our reduced Occitan readers so I would greatly appreciate you could stop for now, the megaerasure! Thank you! Best regards! Claudi/Capsot (d) 11 octobre de 2016 a 15.23 (UTC)
- PS: You see, one of the problem of this massive procedure is that you erase diverse material, most of the things are probably not this interesting, but some are (much more than asteroids in my opinion)... not that long ago I noticed a person as important, in my modest view, as C.S. Lewis and well if I hadn't been working on these stubs I would probably never have created the article all by myself.
- I'm doing this just because I support regional languages and especially Wikimedia projects in regional languages including Occitan Wikipedia. But do you really have the impression that thousands of such emty pages are of interest for anybody? If I delete all these empty pages no reader will care about this in a few weeks. Perhaps in these days somebody will be a bit disturbed. But do you know how many readers have been disturbed in the last five years when they find thousands of articles of such quality? These "articles" are linked in the corresponding articles on French Wikipedia! And if such these articles cause no real trouble to your readers I think it also won't cause trouble to your readers if these empty pages are deleted. --Holder (d) 11 octobre de 2016 a 15.49 (UTC)
- Hi, unfortunately you don't seem to want to understand what I was implying. Could you be more specific about the readers who were disturbed, do you have any statistics, any complaints? The fact is that as a whole this wikipedia has a low quality... I had already said it before many other articles are nothing but nearly empty shells as most of the villages in France, I had already stated that if we wanted to be fair we would probably take out more than 30,000 articles in this wikipedia and well much more actually. I'm glad some of the users here are trying their best to make quality articles... But you know I also watch statistics... and even the most famous Occitan writers hardly have more than 5 visits per day, so stop talking about virtual readers that do not exist... Our readers are few, just as are our contributors. And by erasing thousands of articles, you are not really encouraging us to keep on doing our modest work, on the contrary! So, even though I understand you wish to help, my perception is not that you are helping us; and then if I were in such a situation and felt that my help wasn't appreciated/needed in spite of what I would judge a sad situation, I don't think I would intervene... On the other hand, there are technical issues which have been bothering us for a while, and here you could be really helpful... Otherwise, you can find more work in the many Filipino wikipedias using exclusively bots. Take care, I hope other wikipedians here will tell you their point of view, so we can understand what they think about it all. Have a nice day and week! Claudi/Capsot (d) 12 octobre de 2016 a 11.08 (UTC)
- I've deleted pages without any content in Occitan - no articles. And I don't want to start discussions about quality of stubs. Why do you think that such nonsense is helpful for anybody? Look, you're re-writing pages deleted by me. That's nice. But in this case you write something in Occitan about the theme and not a bot. And anybody - contributors or readers - will think that you have written something on an interesting theme. Nobody will think you had to remove nonsense created by a bot. --Holder (d) 12 octobre de 2016 a 13.25 (UTC)
- Thanks, you precisely told me about an article that has its place in an encyclopaedia (clearly noticeable by its number of translations), more than Asteroid 123,258,589 actually... Let me tell you I never use bots (the creator of the stubs used a bot and actually left mainly because of my criticism...)! Since this article seems really interesting to me, I hope you won't have any problems in my writing on it. Then do as you please! I won't spend too much (of my little) time in arguing if others do not really care about it!). Take care! Claudi/Capsot (d) 12 octobre de 2016 a 13.48 (UTC)
- Adieu-siatz.
